The news that forthcoming Intel Centrino laptop platform (known as Santa Rosa and Centrino Pro) will feature draft 802.11n wireless, even though the final ratification of this standard isn’t likely to come until 2008, are confirmed again. Alan Crouch, director and general manager of Intel’s Communications Technology Lab, said during a presentation at the IEEE Globecom 2006 Expo that Intel expects to put a prestandard version of IEEE 802.11n Wi-Fi technology into its Centrino chips by next year.

Apple released Security Update 2006-007 for Mac OS X 10.3.9 through 10.4.8. The Update is available in Software Update and from Apple Downloads.

Among released Update 2006-007 patches, there is one preventing attackers on the wireless network to cause arbitrary code execution. The issue affects eMac, iBook, iMac, PowerBook G3, PowerBook G4, and Power Mac G4 systems equipped with an original AirPort card. This issue does not affect systems with the AirPort Extreme card.

Everex StepNote NC1500 15.4-inch widescreen laptop can be found at Wal-Mart for $498. Unlike the majority of notebooks on the market, which are powered by Intel’s or AMD’s processors, the StepNote NC1500 features VIA C7-M processor. The C7-M is clocked at 1.5GHz and has 256KB of cache.

The offered laptop has 512MB of DDR2 memory expandable to up to 2GB, a 60GB PATA hard drive, DVD burner and an integrated S3 UniChrome Pro graphics with up to 64MB of shared video memory. Regarding Internet and connectivity, Everex StepNote NC1500 has 802.11b/g wireless, Ethernet LAN and a 56K modem. It also features three USB ports, VGA out, but there is no mention on PCMCIA or ExpressCard slot.

Lenovo refreshed its ThinkPad T60 and T60p notebooks with widescreen displays, Intel Core 2 Duo processors and new ATI Mobility Radeon graphics options.

Lenovo ThinkPad T60 now incorporates 15.4-inch WXGA screen with resolution of 1280×800 or WXGA+ 1680×1050 version, both powered by integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The cheapest widescreen ThinkPad T60 costs $1,549 and comes with WXGA, Core 2 Duo T5500 processor, 512 MB of main memory, 40GB hard drive, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG and a DVD-ROM. The widescreen T60 is reported to weight 5.1 pounds, which is “lighter than any comparable notebook from the top five PC vendors”.

Apple has built a full working prototype of a Mac tablet computer. According to the Smarthouse’s report, three Taiwanese companies are now costing a product for a potential launch in mid 2007.

It is reported that the MAC tablet will be home and education focused and powered by Intel processor. The Mac tablet will be enabled to work with a docking station that allows the device to link to screens with HDMI input. Smarthouse says docking station also has additional memory capability so that users can stream content to either the tablet PC or the docking station or directly to a media center.

The 15.4-inch widescreen Fujitsu LifeBook A6010 desktop replacement laptop, was reviewed recently by CNet, NotebookReview and StrikeMobile. The multimedia A6010 notebook, featuring Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Intel’s integrated graphics was said to be good desktop replacement in terms of performance, but also to have poor battery life.

MSI announced luxurious Crystal laptop collection, featuring the Austrian crystal forming a ring on notebook’s lid. Fujitsu designed a prototype of a laptop that folds down into the size of a CD case. Whether or not the company moves forward to develop and market the purse-sized laptop largely will depend on the reaction it receives at the International Industrial Design Fair in France this week, according to Sean Nemoto, Fujitsu spokesman.

The prototype is the size of a CD case when it’s folded up. The user flips open an 8-inch display screen, just like on a normal laptop. Then user flips open the keyboard, lifting it from left to right to open it up. When it’s open, the keyboard will be about 16 inches wide, according to Nemoto.

Seagate will begin volume production its laptop-use 2.5-inch hybrid hard disk drives in March 2007. The company expects to first introduce 2.5-inch hybrid HDDs with a 256MB buffer size with 512MB and 1GB versions to be introduced in the second half of 2007, Digi Times reports according to Brian Wickman, president of Seagate for the greater China region.

Dolby Laboratories today announced that Lenovo has launched the Tianyi F50, its first notebook to feature Dolby Home Theater that offer advanced home theater audio features and premium surround sound experiences. Lenovo Tianyi F50 owners can also enjoy a vast library of music and more than 17,400 films worldwide that use Dolby technologies.
