Acer to Buy PC Competitor

Taiwan-based PC maker Acer wants to make a meaningful acquisition of another computer company this year and will pass Lenovo to become the third largest computer maker in the world, Acer Chairman and CEO J.T. Wang said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

“We are looking at some candidates which we want to pick up,” Wang said.

In 2003, the company had 2.9 percent of the worldwide PC market, but in the fourth quarter of last year market share went to 7.1 percent.

Acer is known for their AMD- and Intel-based TravelMate and Aspire notebook line-ups, as well as for the luxury Acer Ferrari laptops.
