AMD Turion 64 x2Advanced Micro Devices plans to release next month AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-66, the company’s fastest laptop processor. At the same time, the company will also slash its prices in order to compete with Intel which will release in May its new Centrino platform code-named Santa Rosa, HKEPC reports adding that TL-66 and other forthcoming dual-core Turion CPUs will be 65nm parts.

AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-66 has two processing cores with 2.3GHz clock speed and with 512KB of L2 cache per core. The new 64-bit notebook CPU supports DDR2-800 dual channel memory, while its thermal design power (TDP) remains at 35W.

“In addition to the new high speed model, four of the existing 90nm Turion X2 will start fabricating in 65nm. They include: Turion64 X2 TL-64 (2.2GHz/512KB L2 x 2/35W TDP), TL-60 (2.0GHz/512KB L2 x2/31W TDP), TL-58 (1.9GHz/512KB L2 x2/31W TDP), and TL-56 (1.8GHz/512KB L2 x2/31W TDP). Besides the change in fabrication process, these models also feature an upgrade to DDR2-800 dual channel memory module support and a lower TDP at 31W,” HKEPC’s report says.

Along with release of new CPUs and price cuts, AMD also plans a chipset Bundle promotion program in order to compete with Intel, according to HKEPC’s sources.

Currently, the fastest Turion is TL-64 at 2.2GHz. (TL-60 at 2GHz is not the fastest Turion currently, as it was previously reported).
