Apple will be initiating a laptop battery recall soon, Laptop Logic has learned from industry sources. But, according to CRN, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has reviewed substandard batteries for Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks but determined they didn’t pose any safety threat.

After several Sony battery explosions in Dell’s laptops and company’s recent 4.1 million Sony-made battery recall, there has been concern in the industry that other manufacturers may be affected by the Sony battery defects. Consumer Product Safety Commission officials recently said they are reviewing all Sony-made lithium-ion batteries in laptop computers for fire hazards.

CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson declined to say for CRN if Sony was involved in the manufacturing of the MacBook Pro batteries in question.

These Sony batteries are also used in laptops from Apple, HP and Lenovo.
