Asustek officially announced the Asus Eee PC 900, the second generation of company’s low-cost ultraportable laptop.
Along with other innovations, the 2.2-pound Eee PC 900 mini-notebooks provide bigger displays, larger amounts of RAM, and more data storage space, when compared to the older Eee PC (700/701) models.
The screen is upgraded from 7 to 8.9 inches and now provides a resolution of 1024-by-600 pixels. The Asus Eee PC 900 is based on Intel’s processing technology and integrated graphics. Unofficially, the CPU is the same 900MHz Intel Celeron M found in the 700/701 models. The system comes with 1GB of DDR2 system memory, and up to 20GB of solid state drive storage.
The Eee PC 900 does not include an optical drive. However, there are an SD / MMC (SDHC) memory card reader, built-in 1.3-megapixel web camera, built-in speakers, 802.11b/g wireless and Etnernet LAN connections, three USB ports, and a VGA output.
The new Eee PCs also have a multi-touch feature called FingerGlide. “For example, with just two simple finger movements on the touchpad, users will be able to zoom in and out of pictures (great for looking at image details), or scroll up and down for easier document viewing,” Asustek’s press release says.
These budget ultraportables come with Microsoft Windows or Linux preinstalled. Windows is available on models with 12GB of storage, while Linux is preloaded onto Eee PC 900s with 20GB of data capacity.
The latest Eee PCs initially ship in white or black color.
The Eee PC 900 will hit the U.S. market on May 12th. The Linux and Windows XP loaded versions will both cost $549, according to NotebookReview.
There is no word on presence of rumored touchscreen panels and GPS receivers in the new laptops.
UPDATE: Asus Eee PC 900 is now in stock at select retailers such as Buy.com ($549.99) and ZipZoomfly ($599.99).
