This is a comparison of the ASUS X200CA-HCL1104G ($250) 11.6-inch mini-laptop with touch display and an Intel Celeron processor versus the Transformer Book T100TA 32GB / 64GB ($350 / $400) 10.1-inch 2-in-1 laptop / tablet hybrid with an Intel Atom CPU. Here are their separately listed advantages:
Asus X200CA-HCL1104G
- Slightly faster processor. The Intel Celeron 1007U has a PassMark benchmark CPU score of 1,470 versus 1,080 points achieved with the Atom Z3740. In the usual web and office tasks this won’t be much of an issue, but it’ll be noticeable when you do something intensive like converting or compressing files.
- More RAM (4GB). The Transformer Book T100 has 2GB, which can cause slowdowns in (likely rare) situations when you run lots of apps and have lots of opened web pages in a browser.
- Slightly larger display. But, since both devices have the same screen resolution, you’ll actually have the same amount of space on your Windows desktop and in browsers and other apps.
- Much larger data storage capacity. It has 320GB, whereas the cheaper version of the Transformer (T100TA-B1-GR) has only 32GB and there’s only about 8GB available for users’ files, because Windows & Office installation takes up about 24GB. You can overcome this either by getting a 64GB T100TA-C1-GR version of the T100 or adding a 32GB microSD card (~$25) to the 32GB model.
- More ports and slots. It has an extra USB port over the T100 plus VGA video output (for older monitors and projectors) alongside HDMI. In addition, it supports larger memory card formats such as SD besides microSD cards with help of an adapter.
Asus Transformer Book T100TA (T100TA-B1-GR 32GB &T100TA-C1-GR 64GB)
- Detachable screen for use of the device as a classic tablet.
- Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 included in the price.
- IPS screen technology for wider viewing angles and better overall picture.
- Longer battery life. While the Asus X200CA should last roughly 4 to 5 hours on a single charge, the T100 can deliver twice as much or about 8-10 hours.
- It’s much lighter – 2.4 pounds versus 3.0.
- It’s more fun having a 2-in-1 PC than a classic laptop PC :).
T100’s advantages are more important in my opinion, especially the detachable keyboard, Office for free, IPS screen, and longer battery life. Personally, I would get a 64GB Transformer Book if I assume my budget is $400. On the other hand, $250 for the X200CA plus Office Home and Student for $110 will save you $40 over the 64GB T100.
