ATI RadeonAMD launched today the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 Series graphics processors for laptops, delivering “up to twice” the gaming performance of previous generation mobile GPUs.

The new chips include the high-end ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4800, balanced Mobility Radeon HD 4600, and power saving HD 4500 and HD 4300 Series, all based on 55nm production technology.

The new Radeon products for notebooks support Microsoft DirectX 10.1 technology, as well as full 1080p high definition video playback, provided by the Unified Video Decoder 2. Furthermore, the 4000 Series are the “first ever” mobile graphics solutions that have advanced hi-definition audio capabilities using HDMI with 7.1 digital surround sound and DisplayPort Audio.

Regarding power efficiency, the new GPUs feature ATI PowerPlay, ATI PowerXpress, and ATI Switchable Graphics technologies.

Additionally, the Radeon HD 4800 are the industry’s first laptop GPUs to support GDDR5 memory technology, providing “nearly twice” the memory bandwidth of GDDR3 and GDDR4.

The first notebook PCs with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 Series are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2009.
