AMD Announces ATI XGP External Graphics Platform

ATI XGPAMD today announced ATI XGP external video solution, designed to deliver “enthusiast-class desktop graphic performance and true multimedia upgradeability to notebooks”.

“ATI XGP (External Graphics Platform) is an exclusive technology that capitalizes on PCIe 2.0 to deliver enthusiast-class graphics via a connected cable to an externally powered and cooled device. This unique innovation delivers up to 4.0 Gbyte/s in each direction in bandwidth communication between the notebook and external graphics, whereas previous consumer level external solutions were limited in graphics bandwidth,” AMD explains.

XGP Technology also provides multi-GPU capabilities with ATI CrossFireX technology and includes USB 2.0, enabling connection to a wide variety of USB-based devices, such as external TV tuners or Blu-ray players.

There is no official info on XGP’s availability and pricing.
