Apple Released Security Update 2007-005 for Mac OS X

Mac OS X Apple has released Security Update 2007-005 for its Mac OS X to fix a number of vulnerabilities in this operating system.

The most serious flaws patched with Update include the CoreGraphics and iChat vulnerabilities, enabling malicious code execution. Other programs fixed by the latest update are Alias Manager, BIND, crontabs, Fetchmail, file, mDNSResponder, PPP, Ruby, GNU Screen, Texinfo and VPN.

Apple Prepares Macbook, Macbook Pro Laptops with LED Backlight Displays

MacBookAfter the announcement saying Apple will rid itself of all mercury-based fluorescent LCD panels by the end of 2007, the company prepares revisions of its Macbook and Macbook Pro laptop lines, which should feature eco-friendly LED backlight LCD displays.

“This week Apple seems to be making progress on its transition to LED-backlit LCD panels. Reports confirmed that AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics all have LED-backlight LCD panels that are under review by Apple. Au Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics are further down the line with Apple, having 13.3-inch and 15.4-inch panels already certified by Apple,” Daily Tech reports.

Battery Update 1.2 for MacBook and MacBook Pro Released

AppleApple has released Battery Update 1.2 for MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops. The patch “updates battery firmware and improves battery functionality” and is released after the company discovered that some batteries used in its notebooks may have battery performance issues. However, if the affected batteries do not work properly after the installed Update, Apple will replace these batteries free of charge.

The factors causing the performance issues do not present a safety risk, so users may continue to use current batteries, according to Apple.

Apple’s Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Launch Delayed to October

Mac OS X 10.5 LeopardApple will not be able to release its Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system at its Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. Instead, Apple will ship new OS in October, the company officially announced today.

Cupertino based computer maker says the Mac OS X 10.5 launch is delayed, because it had to borrow experts from its operating system team in order to finish software for iPhone on time.

Macbook Pro with Blu-Ray LogoFastmac today announced the “first & only” Blu-Ray optical drive upgrade for Apple’s MacBook Pro 17-inch, PowerBook G3 and G4, as well as for iBook G4 laptop computers.

The new slimline slot loading drive enables writing of up to 50 Gb of data on one Blu-Ray disc. Fastmac’s Blu-ray drive supports reading, writing and re-writing to single and dual layer Blu-ray media at 1x speeds. The drive is also compatible with standard DVD and CD media and can write to DVD-R and DVD+R media at 8x speed in single layer and 2x speed in dual/ double layer mode. It can rewrite to DVD-R and DVD+R media at 4x speeds. Fastmac’s Blu Ray drive also supports DVD-RAM reading and writing at up to 5x speeds and standard CD-R and CD-RW burning at 8x speeds.

Rumor: Apple to Release Ultra-Portable MacBook

Apple Small MacBook IllustrationApple Inc. may sell its ultra-portable laptops starting in second half of 2007. These Mac subnotebooks will be equipped with flash-memory based solid state drives instead of traditional hard drives, Reuters reports according to Shaw Wu, an analyst at American Technology Research.

Apple spokeswoman Lynn Fox said the company does not comment “on rumor and speculation”. The previous reports say the small MacBook is expected to be released near Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in mid 2007.

Apple Released Support for Novatel HSDPA, EVDO Cards

Novatel's HSDPA CardApple has added the software support for the Novatel’s WWAN products to its Mac OS X 10.4.8 based systems, such as MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops. Owners of the Intel-powered Macs are now enabled to use Novatel HSDPA and EVDO wireless modems for Cingular, Sprint and Verizon networks with Apple’s official drivers.

MacBooks 15.4-Inch Coming in Q2 2007

MacBook 13.3-InchApple is planning to introduce 15.4-inch MacBook laptop in the second quarter of 2007. The new model will fill the gap between the current Apple’s 13.3-inch MacBooks and the 15.4- and 17-inch MacBook Pros, DigiTimes reports according to industry sources in Taiwan.

It is expected that the prices for the 15.4-inch widescreen MacBooks are likely to be more competitive than their 13.3-inch counterparts, due largely to the relatively lower cost of 15.4-inch LCD panels, and will therefore help push further sales of MacBooks.

Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler Patch Coming Next Month

AppleIntel Core 2 Duo processor-based Apple Mac computers, including MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops, incorporate the next generation 802.11n wireless technologies. But, in order to enable it, the customers will have to install “Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler 1.0” patch.

The 802.11n Mac patch will be available starting next month and will cost $4.99, Apple Insider reports.
