Ubuntu-Powered Dell Inspiron 1420N Unveiled

Dell Inspiron 1420NDell Inc. has refreshed its Linux OS-powered consumer PC lineup with the new 14.1-inch Dell Inspiron 1420N notebook. It features Ubuntu version 7.04 Linux distribution and the new Intel “Santa Rosa” mobile platform.

Dell Inspiron 1420N is offered with 667MHz front side bus Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 or T5450 processor, as well as with 800MHz FSB T7100, T7300, or T7500 CPU. It features GM965 chipset incorporating Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 integrated graphics, which manages notebook’s 14.1″ widescreen display with 1280×800 or optional 1440×900 resolution. The system is configurable with up to 4GB of DDR2 memory at 667MHz, and with up to 160GB SATA hard drive at 5400rpm or 7200rpm rotational speed. There are Combo drive or DVD burner options.

Dell Inspiron 1720, Inspiron 1721Dell Inc. has unveiled its new 17-inch Dell Inspiron 1720 and Inspiron 1721 laptops, based on Intel’s and AMD’s chipsets and processors respectively.

The Inspiron 1720 is built on Intel “Santa Rosa” notebook platform and is offered with Core 2 Duo T5250, T5450, T7100, T7300, and T7500 CPUs. These processors have clock speeds ranging from 1.5GHz to 2.2GHz and 800MHz FSB. The 1720 model with GM965 chipset features integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, while the same notebook based on Intel PM965 chipset provides a choice of dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 128MB or NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256MB video card.

Dell Inspiron 1420 Available

Dell Inspiron 1420Dell Inspiron 1420, the company’s 14.1-inch consumer notebook based on Intel “Santa Rosa” platform, is now available for purchase at Dell’s website.

The 1420 is offered with the new Core 2 Duo processors with 800MHz front side bus and clock speeds ranging from 1.5GHz to 2.2GHz. Along with T7100, T7300, and T7500 Core 2 Duo CPUs there are two new budget models: the T5450, and the T5250. According to earlier reports, Dell Inspiron 1420 will be also configurable with the “Santa Rosa” compatible Celeron M processor.

Dell to Replace for Free Laptop LCDs with Vertical Line Issue

DellDell announced today it will replace for free the faulty LCD displays with vertical line problem in some of Inspiron 6000 and 8600, Latitude D800 and D810, and Precision M60 and M70 notebook computers.

According to Dell, the displays in small number of these laptop PCs develop one pixel wide vertical line or multiple lines across the screen. The cause of the problem has been traced to one specific component used in some of LCDs shipped on the potentially affected systems.

Dell to Release New Inspiron and Vostro Laptops in June/July

Dell Inspiron Notebook Italia website has published some details on the new Dell Inspiron laptops and the upcoming Dell “Vostro” notebook line.

The revealed Dell Inspiron 1520 and Inspiron 1521 have 15.4-inch widescreen displays and weigh 6.6 pounds. The 1520 is based on Intel “Santa Rosa” notebook platform with Core 2 Duo processor and features nVidia GeForce Go 8600M GT dedicated video card, while the Amd Turion 64 X2 dual core-powered Inspiron 1521 has the integrated ATI Radeon X1270 graphics.

Dell Inspiron E1505 N UbuntuDell has just started selling the new Inspiron E1505 N notebooks with Ubuntu Linux 7.04 operating system installed.

Dell Inspiron E1505 N consumer laptop starts at $599. It is $100 cheaper than its E1505 sibling with Microsoft’s Windows Vista Home Basic preloaded. When compared to the same E1505 with Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Ultimate, the Ubuntu-powered E1505 N is cheaper for $129, $199, and $299, respectively.

Inspiron E1505 to Be Dell’s First Ubuntu Linux Laptop

Dell Inspiron E1505Dell Ispiron E1505 will be the Company’s first consumer notebook PC featuring preloaded Linux operating system. The E1505 and two desktop computers with Ubuntu 7.04 Linux will be offered starting on Thursday, according to the e-mail by one of the Dell’s employees.

“We will be launching a Linux based OS (Ubuntu) on the E520 (Dimension desktop), 1505 (Inspiron laptop) and XPS 410 (desktop) starting next Thursday, 5/24. We expect these systems to be less than 1% of our OS mix for the entire year which is approximately 20,000 systems annually,” the email published on Jeremy’s Blog says.

Dell’s Ubuntu Linux Laptops Officially Announced

Ubuntu LinuxDell Inc. today officially announced that it will offer Ubuntu Linux 7.04 operating system preloaded on its consumer PCs. The computer maker says it will start selling select notebooks and desktops with Ubuntu “in the coming weeks”.

“Back in February when we launched IdeaStorm, we received overwhelming feedback from the community that you wanted Linux client options available throughout Dell’s product line. In response, we told you that we were working towards this goal, and we did a survey of your preferences. When asked which distribution of Linux Dell should prioritize on, Ubuntu was the most requested option. Today, we are excited to tell you that Dell will begin offering Canonicals’ latest version, Ubuntu 7.04, as an option on select Dell consumer models in the U.S. in the coming weeks,” Dell published.

Dell InspironDell has brought back Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system option to its Inspiron laptops, as well as to select Dimension desktop PCs, after the visitors of Dell IdeaStorm Blog voted for that idea.

“We heard you loud and clear on bringing the Windows XP option back to our Dell consumer PC offerings. Based on your feedback, the following Dell consumer systems with Windows XP are now immediately available on Dell.com: Inspiron: 1405, 1705, 1505, 1501 and Dell Dimension: E520, E521,” Company announced.

“We still do not know which Linux Dell Inc. will be installing on its desktops and laptops. Among the distributions we know to be under consideration are: Novell/SUSE, Red Hat, Fedora, openSUSE, and Ubuntu. It would be safe to say now, though, that Ubuntu will be at least one of the Linuxes that Dell will be offering,” DesktopLinux claims.

Dell LoJack for Laptops Theft ProtectionDell Inc. is now offering the Computrace LoJack for Laptops Theft Protection service to its notebook PC buyers.

Absolute Software, the maker of LoJack for Laptops, explains that LoJack software installed on your computer works behind the scenes to silently and securely contact its Monitoring Center, and if the laptop is stolen, reports its location using any Internet connection. The Recovery Team then tracks your computer’s location and partners with local law enforcement to get your computer back.

Dell Confirmed its Linux PCs Offer Plans

Linux Tux on Dell LaptopDell Inc. has confirmed that it will offer notebook and desktop computers with factory installed Linux operating system, after the thousands of Dell’s IdeaStorm blog visitors voted for that idea.

“Dell has heard you and we will expand our Linux support beyond our existing servers and Precision workstation line. Our first step in this effort is offering Linux pre-installed on select desktop and notebook systems. We will provide an update in the coming weeks that includes detailed information on which systems we will offer, our testing and certification efforts, and the Linux distribution(s) that will be available. The countdown begins today,” the company responded.

Dell’s Revenues Drop Due to Weak Notebook Sales

DellDell Inc.’s fourth-quarter profits plunged 33 percent because of weak sales of its notebook computers, Associated Press reports.

Mobility products sales, including laptops, fell 2 percent year-over-year despite a 2 percent increase in units shipped. Desktop PCs, meanwhile, saw an 18 percent decline, despite the launch of Microsoft’s new Windows Vista operating system.

Dell to Sell Linux-Preloaded Notebooks and Desktops

Dell Latitude with Linux TuxDell Inc. will the most likely start selling Linux-certified laptop and desktop PCs, the computer maker announced after thousands of users voted for that idea on a company’s blog called Dell Idea Storm.

“It’s exciting to see the IdeaStorm community’s interest in open source solutions like Linux and OpenOffice. Your feedback has been all about flexibility and we have seen a consistent request to provide platforms that allow people to install their operating system of choice. We are listening, and as a result, we are working with Novell to certify our corporate client products for Linux, including our OptiPlex desktops, Latitude notebooks and Dell Precision workstations. This is another step towards ensuring that our customers have a good experience with Linux on our systems,” Dell published.
