Acer to Acquire Gateway
Acer Inc., the world’s third PC vendor, announced today it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Gateway Inc., the fourth largest PC company in the United States. The deal is worth $710 million.
“The acquisition of Gateway and its strong brand immediately completes Acer’s global footprint, by strengthening our US presence. This will be an excellent addition to Acer’s already strong positions in Europe and Asia. Upon acquiring Gateway, we will further solidify our position as number three PC vendor globally,” said J.T. Wang, Chairman of Acer.
Gateway Announced M, T Series Multimedia Notebooks
Gateway today announced the 15.4-inch Gateway M-Series and 14.1-inch Gateway T-Series multimedia notebook PCs, both featuring Intel Centrino Mobile Technology with Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the new industrial design with Crimson Red, Pacific Blue or Slate Grey colors.
“Several standard and optional features available on notebooks purchased through Gateway’s direct channel build on the notebooks’ vast capabilities, such as 1080p-capable display, an integrated fingerprint reader and a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) for digital video and audio out,” the PC maker’s press release says.

Gateway C-140 / E-295C Tablet PC Available
Gateway today announced its C-140 (E-295C for business customers) 14-inch tablet PC, aimed at digital artists. It features Wacom’s digital pen technology, Intel’s “Santa Rosa” notebook platform and an optional AMD-ATI’s dedicated graphics solution.
According to press release, the battery-free Gateway executive stylus is pressure sensitive, and, with 256 levels of sensitivity, is ideal for simulating paint on canvas. Gateway C-140/E-295C is configurable with Intel Core 2 Duo T7100, T7300, T7500, or T7700 processor, and with up to 4GB of DDR2 memory. By default, Gatway’s new tablet comes with Intel GM965 chipset and Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 integrated graphics, but there is also an option of PM965 chipset with ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 HD 256MB dedicated video card. Its 14″ widescreen display provides 1280 x 768 maximal resolution. The C-140/E-295C convertible notebook ships with up to 120GB SATA hard drive and has a built-in DVD burner or Combo drive.

Gateway 295 Series Tablet PC Leaked
Gateway plans to unveil the 295 Series Tablet PC, featuring 14-inch screen and Intel “Santa Rosa” notebook platform.
According to leaked specifications, Gateway 295 (E-295M model) has Wacom and touchscreen capabilities, Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor at 1.8GHz clock speed or T7300 at 2GHz, 2GB of DDR2 system memory, and 60GB-100GB hard drive. It is not known if it has built in optical drive. The Gateway 295’s 14-inch widescreen display has 1280-by-768 pixel resolution and is managed by the integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100.

Gateway Recalls Batteries Used in 400VTX, 450ROG Laptops
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today announced a recall of the notebook batteries used in some of Gateway 400VTX and 450ROG series notebooks, because of overheating problems.
These batteries could pose a fire hazard to consumers, which are advised to stop using recalled products immediately and contact Gateway regarding battery replacement. Gateway has received four reports of battery packs overheating, including minor property damage, but no injuries have been reported.
Gateway E-475M Business-Class Laptop Introduced
Gateway today introduced E-475M, the 15.4-inch widescreen 1280×800 business notebook, based on Intel “Santa Rosa” Centrino platform.
Gateway E-475M is configurable the latest 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo processors with 800MHz front side bus, including T7100 at 1.8GHz, T7300 at 2.0GHz, T7500 at 2.2GHz, and T7700 at 2.4GHz. The E475M is offered with up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 system memory, 120GB SATA hard drive, and a choice of CD-ROM, Combo Drive or DVD burner.

Gateway E-265M Business Notebook Announced
Gateway today announced E-265M 14.1-inch widescreen 1280×800 business laptop, based on Intel “Santa Rosa” Centrino notebook platform.
Gateway E-265M is offered with a full range of the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors with 800MHz front side bus and 64-bit capability, including T7100 at 1.8GHz, T7300 at 2.0GHz, T7500 at 2.2GHz, and T7700 at 2.4GHz. The T7100 CPU has 2MB of L2 cache, while the others have 4MB. Gateway’s new laptop is configurable with up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 system memory using two 2GB modules.

Gateway E-155C Tablet PC Announced
Gateway unveiled today the E-155C Tablet PC. The new thin and light convertible notebook supports both a digital pen and touch screen inputs provided by Wacom, and is powered by the latest Intel Core 2 Duo U7500 Ultra Low Voltage processor at 1.06GHz.
Gateway E-155C has a 12-inch widescreen display with 1280 x 800 resolution and with anti-reflection polarizer for “sun-light readability”.
Gateway E-100M to Be Refreshed with Core 2 Duo ULV
Gateway will be among the first OEMs to offer Intel’s Core 2 Duo (Merom) ultra-low voltage processor in an ultra-portable laptop. Starting May 3, Gateway customers will be able to order an E-100M business sub-notebook with Intel’s new U7600 ULV CPU, eWeek reports.
It is expected that the inclusion of the recently announced ultra-low voltage Merom processor will add $75 to the current E-100M’s price.
Gateway NX270S Provides Vista Basic Features for $599
Gateway unveiled the NX270S notebook with Windows Vista Home Basic operating system.
The 14.1-inch widescreen Gateway NX270S provides the 1280 x 800 display resolution, and comes with Intel Celeron 430 processor and 512MB of main memory achieved with two 256MB modules. The 512MB of RAM is the minimal requirement for running Vista Home Basic. If you want to upgrade to Vista Premium, Microsoft and laptop vendors advise you to use at least 1GB of RAM.

Gateway Unveiled NX570 Notebooks
Gateway today unveiled the 15.4-inch widescreen Gateway NX570 laptop series, featuring Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor. The company also announced that during the holiday selling season, from now through December 28, the NX570X model will be offered with a $200 instant savings bringing its price down to $699.99. But, the NX570X incorporates older Intel Core Duo (Yonah) CPU.
The NX570 laptop includes dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 graphics with 128MB of dedicated video memory or integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 supporting up to 128MB of shared system memory. It supports up to 4GB of main memory and has SATA hard drive with storage space ranging from 40GB to 160GB. You can also choose an integrated multi-format double-layer DVD burner or a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive.
CPSC Announced 340,000 Battery Recall
A voluntary recall of 340,000 laptop batteries made by Sony was officially announced in the United States today. The latest-recalled lithium ion batteries containing Sony cells were used in Fujitsu’s, Gateway’s, Sony’s, and Toshiba’s notebook computers. These lithium ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published.
According to the CPSC’s press release, consumers should stop using the recalled batteries immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Gateway Announced Laptop Battery Recall
Gateway announced today a voluntary recall of approximately 35,000 notebook-use lithium ion batteries containing battery cells manufactured by Sony.
“Under very rare circumstances, these batteries can overheat and create a potential fire hazard. While Gateway has not identified any failures of this type in Gateway systems using the recalled batteries, the company is cooperating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Sony to act in the interest of customer safety”, Gateway published.
Gateway M465-E with T7400 Merom Reviewed
Gateway M465-E business laptop was recently refreshed with new Intel Core 2 Duo (codenamed Merom) processors. Along with Intel’s Core Duos and Celerons, the M465-E is now configurable with T7200 and T7400 Meroms. PC Magazine reviewed this 15.4-inch widescreen laptop with 2.16GHz T7400 which features 4MB of cache.
The Gateway M465-E features up to 4GB of memory, an Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 or optional ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics card with 64MB or 128MB of video memory, up to 120GB SATA hard drive, 802.11a/b/g wireless and an optional Bluetooth networking module. The M465-E notebook comes with Windows XP Home or Professional.
Gateway Merom Laptops Announced
Gateway today announced Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile (Merom) processor options when purchasing M255-E, M285-E, M465-E and M685-E profesional laptop models, as same as Gateway NX260X, NX560, NX860X and CX210X consumer oriented notebooks.
These laptops will be available with Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 (1.83GHz, 2MB L2 cache), T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 cache) and T7400 (2.16GHz, 4MB L2 cache) processors from August 31, while notebooks with the Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66GHz, 2MB L2 cache) processor will be offered in September.
