HitachiHitachi GST today introduced the Travelstar 5K500 laptop hard drive featuring 500GB of storage space, which is the world’s highest capacity for a 2.5-inch HDD.

“The half-terabyte (500GB) Travelstar 5K500 is poised to usher in a new era of “slim” desktops, full-featured notebooks, gaming consoles and other advanced applications for consumers on-the-go,” the company’s press release says.

Samsung Spinpoint M Series Notebook HDDSamsung has released the Spinpoint M6 HM320JI 320GB 2.5-inch notebook hard drive, featuring a 5,400rpm rotational speed, Serial ATA interface, and 8GB of cache memory.

The M6 HM320JI 320GB utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology and has an optional Free-Fall Sensor that protects data from drops, as well as an optional Rotary Vibration Controller that minimizes the influence of external vibration.

Seagate Momentus 5400 PSD – The Company’s First Hybrid HDD

Seagate Momentus 5400 PSDSeagate has launched the Momentus 5400 PSD laptop-use hybrid hard drives, featuring 256MB of embedded Flash memory for faster boot-up and better system performance.

According to InformationWeek, the 5400 PSD 2.5-inch hybrid HDD has 160GB of storage capacity and sells for $190, “which is almost a 30% premium over a traditional drive of equal storage”. This Seagate’s Power Savings Drive for notebooks can quicken the time it takes to boot a PC by 20 percent, and uses half as much power as a traditional hard drive reportedly.

Alienware Offers 320GB HDDs in Its Laptops

AlienwareAlienware has started to offer single and dual Samsung 320GB hard drive configurations in RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes in the 17-inch Area-51 m9750 and Aurora m9700 notebooks, as well as a single Samsung 320GB configuration in the 15.4-inch Area-51 m5550 notebook.

Toshiba to Launch 320GB Laptop Hard Drive

Toshiba MK3252GSX (320GB) and MK2049GSYToshiba Corporation today announced nine new 2.5-inch laptop-use hard disk drives, including the model with 320GB of storage capacity, as well as the 200GB model at 7200rpm rotational speed.

Toshiba’s MK3252GSX notebook hard drive uses an improved read-write head and enhanced magnetic layer to achieve “an industry-leading capacity of 320GB”. The MK3252GSX spins at 5,400rpm and has 8MB of buffer memory.

Fujitsu MHY2250BH and other hard drives in new MHY2 BH series feature 5400rpm rotational speed, ATA and SATA interfaces and 8MB of buffer cache memory.

Sony VAIO G1 Now with Solid State Disk

Sony VAIO G1Sony has added a flash-memory based 32GB solid-state disk (SSD) option to its VAIO G1 12.1-inch screen ultra-portable laptop, the Japanese website Impress reports.

When configured with solid state disk instead of with hard drive, the Sony Vaio G1′s battery life is extended for 30 minutes, and lasts for up to 6.5 hours with standard battery or for up to 13 hours with extended battery.

Seagate Momentus 7200.2 Laptop HDD Available

SeagateSeagate Technology today announced the worldwide availability of the Momentus 7200.2, its 2.5-inch notebook-use hard drive series with 7200rpm rotational speed and a SATA2 (3Gbit/second) interface. The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 combines capacity-boosting perpendicular recording technology with free-fall protection for beefed-up laptop durability.

“Seagate Momentus 7200.2 delivers up to 160GB of capacity using perpendicular recording technology and combines a fast Serial ATA 3.0 Gbit/second interface with 7200rpm spin speed to enable the highest- performance laptops ever. The hard drive is also offered with an optional free-fall sensor to help prevent drive damage and data loss upon impact if a laptop PC is dropped. The sensor works by detecting any changes in acceleration equal to the force of gravity, then parking the head off the disc to prevent contact with the platter in a free fall of as little as 8 inches”, the Seagate’s press release says.

The Momentus 7200.2, the Company’s second-generation 7200rpm notebook drive, is offered in 80GB, 100GB, 120GB and 160GB of storage capacities.

Along with Seagate, Fujitsu has also announced 160GB 7200rpm SATA2 laptop hard drive last week.
