Seagate has announced the Momentus 5400.4 Series 2.5.-inch hard drives, with capacities of up to 250GB, a Serial ATA 3.0 Gbit/second interface, and an advanced shock resistance.

“Seagate’s newest notebook drive packs industry-leading operating and non-operating shock resistance of 325 Gs and 900 Gs, respectively, making it ideal for systems that are subject to rough handling or high levels of vibration,” the company’s press release says.

Samsung Electronics announced today the hard drive model with 160 gigabyte of storage in company’s Spinpoint N2 1.8-inch HDD series.

The 160GB Spinpoint N2, with the industry’s largest capacity for a 1.8-inch form factor, spins at 4200rpm, according to the press release.

Toshiba Corporation today announced nine new 2.5-inch laptop-use hard disk drives, including the model with 320GB of storage capacity, as well as the 200GB model at 7200rpm rotational speed.

Toshiba’s MK3252GSX notebook hard drive uses an improved read-write head and enhanced magnetic layer to achieve “an industry-leading capacity of 320GB”. The MK3252GSX spins at 5,400rpm and has 8MB of buffer memory.

Fujitsu is expected to announce a hard drive technology breakthrough this week that could lead the company to produce a two-platter 2.5-inch HDDs with storage capacities of up to 1.2 terabyte (TB) as soon as 2010, Computer World reports.

Fujitsu says it has successfully demonstrated the ability to perform basic read/write capability of each individual nanohole of the new patterned media using a typical flying head on a rotating disk.

The recently announced notebook-use Samsung’s hybrid hard drive (HHD or H-HDD), which combines a flash memory and a traditional hard disk for improved performance, is now available for purchase at CMS Products.

The offered HM16HJI model, which belongs to 2.5-inch MH80 hybrid hard drive series, features 160GB of storage capacity, 256MB of OneNAND Flash memory, Serial ATA interface, and 5400rpm rotational speed. It is priced at $299.

Western Digital Corp. today announced the availability of its 250GB WD Scorpio 2.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive for notebooks. The WD2500BEVS drive spins at 5400rpm and employs perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology for higher storage capacity in a small form factor.

The new WD Scorpio 250GB laptop HDD has 8MB of buffer cache memory and 12 ms access time. It utilizes Western Digital’s technologies such as WhisperDrive for quiet work and ShockGuard for hard drive’s physical protection.

Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of a MHY2250BH 2.5-inch laptop hard drive with a storage capacity of 250GB in a 9.5mm-thin profile, which is “among the industry’s highest capacity HDDs in its class”. Fujitsu MHY2250BH and other hard drives in new MHY2 BH series feature 5400rpm rotational speed, ATA and SATA interfaces and 8MB of buffer cache memory.

“With an idle acoustic noise level of 2.4 bels, and low power consumption, operating at 1.9 watts or less when reading or writing data, the MHY2 BH series is also among the best-in-class in terms of noise and energy efficiency,” Fujitsu says.

Hitachi has announced volume shipment of the Travelstar 7K200, “the industry’s highest-capacity, highest-performing notebook hard drive with new optional data encryption technology”. The 2.5-inch Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 spins at 7200rpm. It comes with 80GB, 100GB, 120GB, 160GB, or 200GB storage capacity and 16MB cache buffer memory, and uses SATA 3GB/s interface.

Samsung has announced today the R55, the first laptop featuring hybrid hard drive, which combines a standard hard drive with built-in flash memory.

Along with 80GB hybrid drive at 5400rpm with 256Mb of OneNAND Flash memory, the 15.4-inch widescreen Samsung R55 incorporates Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 CPU at 1.83GHz, nVidia GeForce 7400 graphics card, Super Multi DL optical drive and Windows Vista Premium operating system.

The 250GB 2.5-inch laptop hard drives spinning at 5400rpm have arrived to the market, according to the reports about these drives offered with Dell’s and Alienware’s notebook PCs.

The configuration pages of select Alienware Aurora and Dell XPS notebooks show the new hard drives use Serial ATA (SATA) interface and have 8MB of cache memory.

Sony has added a flash-memory based 32GB solid-state disk (SSD) option to its VAIO G1 12.1-inch screen ultra-portable laptop, the Japanese website Impress reports.

When configured with solid state disk instead of with hard drive, the Sony Vaio G1’s battery life is extended for 30 minutes, and lasts for up to 6.5 hours with standard battery or for up to 13 hours with extended battery.

Addonics Technologies has announced a family of CF Hard Drive Adapters, which allow users to replace 2.5-inch IDE/SATA hard drives in their laptop computers with “shock/vibration resistant and less power-hungry Compact Flash (CF) media”.

“With these new Addonics adapters any equipment, such as a notebook computer, that uses a 2.5″ IDE or SATA hard drive can be easily converted to use the more reliable CF media. Once installed, the CF card appears as an ordinary hard drive to the system BIOS and operating system and can also be configured as a boot device,” the manufacturer says.

The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 combines capacity-boosting perpendicular recording technology with free-fall protection for beefed-up laptop durability.

Correction: The LG Electronics representative told Laptoping.com authors that the reported R400 notebook does not feature hybrid hard drive. Also, the image published in this article is not the R400’s.

“LG considers to introduce a Hybrid HDD notebook but we haven’t decided when to release it. In conclusion, we do not provide the R400 with a Hybrid HDD,” the representative said.

LG R400, the first notebook with hybrid hard drive, will be available starting in the end of March, according to its product page at Canadian OnlineElectronics store.

LG R400 incorporates Samsung’s 2.5-inch MH80 hybrid HDD with 120GB of storage capacity. There are MH80 models with built-in 128MB or 256MB of flash memory used for data buffering. When compared to standard laptop hard drives which usually have 2MB, 4MB, or 8MB of buffer cache, hybrid HDDs offer benefits such as improved boot up times and faster application loading, as well as decreased power consumption and better reliability.

Samsung Electronics has announced it has begun shipments of its hybrid hard drives. Samsung’s MH80 series hybrid HDDs are offered in 80GB, 120GB and 160GB capacities and with 128 or 256 megabytes of built-in flash memory, DigiTimes reports.

“Optimized to work in conjunction with Windows Vista capable notebook PCs, Samsung’s MH80 combines a hard disk drive with a cache comprised of Samsung’s OneNAND flash memory, and Microsoft’s ReadyDrive software, offering faster boot and resume times, increased battery life and greater reliability compared to traditional magnetic media technology,” the report says.
