Seagate Momentus 5400 PSD - The Company’s First Hybrid HDD

Seagate Momentus 5400 PSDSeagate has launched the Momentus 5400 PSD laptop-use hybrid hard drives, featuring 256MB of embedded Flash memory for faster boot-up and better system performance.

According to InformationWeek, the 5400 PSD 2.5-inch hybrid HDD has 160GB of storage capacity and sells for $190, “which is almost a 30% premium over a traditional drive of equal storage”. This Seagate’s Power Savings Drive for notebooks can quicken the time it takes to boot a PC by 20 percent, and uses half as much power as a traditional hard drive reportedly.

Alienware Offers 320GB HDDs in Its Laptops

AlienwareAlienware has started to offer single and dual Samsung 320GB hard drive configurations in RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes in the 17-inch Area-51 m9750 and Aurora m9700 notebooks, as well as a single Samsung 320GB configuration in the 15.4-inch Area-51 m5550 notebook.

“The Area-51 m9750 and Aurora m9700 are the industry’s first mobile systems to provide up to 640GB of hard drive space, while the Area-51 m9750 is the first to offer the combination of a 320GB hard drive and a 64GB solid state drive. As a result, Area-51 m9750 users can enjoy the best possible options in multiple hard drive formats,” the Alineware’s press release says.

Seagate Momentus 5400.4Seagate has announced the Momentus 5400.4 Series 2.5.-inch hard drives, with capacities of up to 250GB, a Serial ATA 3.0 Gbit/second interface, and an advanced shock resistance.

“Seagate’s newest notebook drive packs industry-leading operating and non-operating shock resistance of 325 Gs and 900 Gs, respectively, making it ideal for systems that are subject to rough handling or high levels of vibration,” the company’s press release says.

Toshiba to Launch 320GB Laptop Hard Drive

Toshiba MK3252GSX (320GB) and MK2049GSYToshiba Corporation today announced nine new 2.5-inch laptop-use hard disk drives, including the model with 320GB of storage capacity, as well as the 200GB model at 7200rpm rotational speed.

Toshiba’s MK3252GSX notebook hard drive uses an improved read-write head and enhanced magnetic layer to achieve “an industry-leading capacity of 320GB”. The MK3252GSX spins at 5,400rpm and has 8MB of buffer memory.

Fujitsu Could Produce 1.2TB Laptop Hard Drives

FujitsuFujitsu is expected to announce a hard drive technology breakthrough this week that could lead the company to produce a two-platter 2.5-inch HDDs with storage capacities of up to 1.2 terabyte (TB) as soon as 2010, Computer World reports.

Fujitsu says it has successfully demonstrated the ability to perform basic read/write capability of each individual nanohole of the new patterned media using a typical flying head on a rotating disk.

WD Scorpio 250GB Notebook Hard Drive Announced

250GB WD Scorpio WD2500BEVSWestern Digital Corp. today announced the availability of its 250GB WD Scorpio 2.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive for notebooks. The WD2500BEVS drive spins at 5400rpm and employs perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology for higher storage capacity in a small form factor.

The new WD Scorpio 250GB laptop HDD has 8MB of buffer cache memory and 12 ms access time. It utilizes Western Digital’s technologies such as WhisperDrive for quiet work and ShockGuard for hard drive’s physical protection.

Fujitsu MHY2250BH and other hard drives in new MHY2 BH series feature 5400rpm rotational speed, ATA and SATA interfaces and 8MB of buffer cache memory.

250GB 5400rpm Laptop Hard Drives Arrived

One of the Hitachi's Travelstar HDDsThe 250GB 2.5-inch laptop hard drives spinning at 5400rpm have arrived to the market, according to the reports about these drives offered with Dell’s and Alienware’s notebook PCs.

The configuration pages of select Alienware Aurora and Dell XPS notebooks show the new hard drives use Serial ATA (SATA) interface and have 8MB of cache memory.

Sony VAIO G1 Now with Solid State Disk

Sony VAIO G1Sony has added a flash-memory based 32GB solid-state disk (SSD) option to its VAIO G1 12.1-inch screen ultra-portable laptop, the Japanese website Impress reports.

When configured with solid state disk instead of with hard drive, the Sony Vaio G1’s battery life is extended for 30 minutes, and lasts for up to 6.5 hours with standard battery or for up to 13 hours with extended battery.

“With these new Addonics adapters any equipment, such as a notebook computer, that uses a 2.5″ IDE or SATA hard drive can be easily converted to use the more reliable CF media. Once installed, the CF card appears as an ordinary hard drive to the system BIOS and operating system and can also be configured as a boot device,” the manufacturer says.
