Samsung Electronics announced this week the development of “the world’s first 500GB 2.5″ hard drive that fits in the industry’s standard 9.5mm height dimension”.
Samsung’s new Spinpoint M6 500GB consists of three 166GB platters in a standard laptop HDD form factor.
Hitachi GST today introduced the Travelstar 5K500 laptop hard drive featuring 500GB of storage space, which is the world’s highest capacity for a 2.5-inch HDD.
“The half-terabyte (500GB) Travelstar 5K500 is poised to usher in a new era of “slim” desktops, full-featured notebooks, gaming consoles and other advanced applications for consumers on-the-go,” the company’s press release says.
Samsung has released the Spinpoint M6 HM320JI 320GB 2.5-inch notebook hard drive, featuring a 5,400rpm rotational speed, Serial ATA interface, and 8GB of cache memory.
The M6 HM320JI 320GB utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology and has an optional Free-Fall Sensor that protects data from drops, as well as an optional Rotary Vibration Controller that minimizes the influence of external vibration.
SanDisk Corporation has unveiled the Vaulter Disk, a solid-state storage solution that works in conjunction with a PC’s hard drive.
A SanDisk Vaulter Disk-equipped PC is claimed to provide enhanced performance over a PC that has only a standard HDD. Both the Vaulter and a hard drive are integrated into a PC and operate simultaneously, the company says.
Seagate has launched the Momentus 5400 PSD laptop-use hybrid hard drives, featuring 256MB of embedded Flash memory for faster boot-up and better system performance.
According to InformationWeek, the 5400 PSD 2.5-inch hybrid HDD has 160GB of storage capacity and sells for $190, “which is almost a 30% premium over a traditional drive of equal storageâ€. This Seagate’s Power Savings Drive for notebooks can quicken the time it takes to boot a PC by 20 percent, and uses half as much power as a traditional hard drive reportedly.
Alienware has started to offer single and dual Samsung 320GB hard drive configurations in RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes in the 17-inch Area-51 m9750 and Aurora m9700 notebooks, as well as a single Samsung 320GB configuration in the 15.4-inch Area-51 m5550 notebook.
“The Area-51 m9750 and Aurora m9700 are the industry’s first mobile systems to provide up to 640GB of hard drive space, while the Area-51 m9750 is the first to offer the combination of a 320GB hard drive and a 64GB solid state drive. Samsung Electronics announced today the hard drive model with 160 gigabyte of storage in company’s Spinpoint N2 1.8-inch HDD series.
The 160GB Spinpoint N2, with the industry’s largest capacity for a 1.8-inch form factor, spins at 4200rpm, according to the press release.
Toshiba Corporation today announced nine new 2.5-inch laptop-use hard disk drives, including the model with 320GB of storage capacity, as well as the 200GB model at 7200rpm rotational speed.
Toshiba’s MK3252GSX notebook hard drive uses an improved read-write head and enhanced magnetic layer to achieve “an industry-leading capacity of 320GB”. The MK3252GSX spins at 5,400rpm and has 8MB of buffer memory.
The recently announced notebook-use Samsung’s hybrid hard drive (HHD or H-HDD), which combines a flash memory and a traditional hard disk for improved performance, is now available for purchase at CMS Products.
The offered HM16HJI model, which belongs to 2.5-inch MH80 hybrid hard drive series, features 160GB of storage capacity, 256MB of OneNAND Flash memory, Serial ATA interface, and 5400rpm rotational speed. It is priced at $299.
Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of a MHY2250BH 2.5-inch laptop hard drive with a storage capacity of 250GB in a 9.5mm-thin profile, which is “among the industry’s highest capacity HDDs in its class”. Fujitsu MHY2250BH and other hard drives in new MHY2 BH series feature 5400rpm rotational speed, ATA and SATA interfaces and 8MB of buffer cache memory.
“With an idle acoustic noise level of 2.4 bels, and low power consumption, operating at 1.9 watts or less when reading or writing data, the MHY2 BH series is also among the best-in-class in terms of noise and energy efficiency,” Fujitsu says.
Hitachi has announced volume shipment of the Travelstar 7K200, “the industry’s highest-capacity, highest-performing notebook hard drive with new optional data encryption technology”. The 2.5-inch Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 spins at 7200rpm. It comes with 80GB, 100GB, 120GB, 160GB, or 200GB storage capacity and 16MB cache buffer memory, and uses SATA 3GB/s interface.
“With double the capacity and a 22 percent performance improvement over its predecessor, the 200-gigabyte (GB), 7200 RPM Travelstar 7K200 reigns supreme as the leader in this elite notebook hard drive segment. Now, with optional hard-drive level “Bulk Data Encryption” technology from Hitachi, the Travelstar 7K200 offers even greater cachet to notebook users by helping to guard against data loss and piracy,” the Company’s press release says.
Samsung has announced today the R55, the first laptop featuring hybrid hard drive, which combines a standard hard drive with built-in flash memory.
Along with 80GB hybrid drive at 5400rpm with 256Mb of OneNAND Flash memory, the 15.4-inch widescreen Samsung R55 incorporates Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 CPU at 1.83GHz, nVidia GeForce 7400 graphics card, Super Multi DL optical drive and Windows Vista Premium operating system.
Sony has added a flash-memory based 32GB solid-state disk (SSD) option to its VAIO G1 12.1-inch screen ultra-portable laptop, the Japanese website Impress reports.
When configured with solid state disk instead of with hard drive, the Sony Vaio G1′s battery life is extended for 30 minutes, and lasts for up to 6.5 hours with standard battery or for up to 13 hours with extended battery.
Addonics Technologies has announced a family of CF Hard Drive Adapters, which allow users to replace 2.5-inch IDE/SATA hard drives in their laptop computers with “shock/vibration resistant and less power-hungry Compact Flash (CF) mediaâ€.
“With these new Addonics adapters any equipment, such as a notebook computer, that uses a 2.5″ IDE or SATA hard drive can be easily converted to use the more reliable CF media. Once installed, the CF card appears as an ordinary hard drive to the system BIOS and operating system and can also be configured as a boot device,” the manufacturer says.
Seagate Technology today announced the worldwide availability of the Momentus 7200.2, its 2.5-inch notebook-use hard drive series with 7200rpm rotational speed and a SATA2 (3Gbit/second) interface. The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 combines capacity-boosting perpendicular recording technology with free-fall protection for beefed-up laptop durability.
“Seagate Momentus 7200.2 delivers up to 160GB of capacity using perpendicular recording technology and combines a fast Serial ATA 3.0 Gbit/second interface with 7200rpm spin speed to enable the highest- performance laptops ever. The hard drive is also offered with an optional free-fall sensor to help prevent drive damage and data loss upon impact if a laptop PC is dropped. The sensor works by detecting any changes in acceleration equal to the force of gravity, then parking the head off the disc to prevent contact with the platter in a free fall of as little as 8 inches”, the Seagate’s press release says.
The Momentus 7200.2, the Company’s second-generation 7200rpm notebook drive, is offered in 80GB, 100GB, 120GB and 160GB of storage capacities.
Along with Seagate, Fujitsu has also announced 160GB 7200rpm SATA2 laptop hard drive last week.
