Western Digital (WD) this week announced the WD1600BEVS, the 160 GB WD Scorpio 2.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive. The new laptop hard drive spins at 5400rpm, but, according to WD, it has low power consumption similar to 4200rpm notebook hard discs. The WD1600BEVS has 8MB of buffer size.

The new HDD employs perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to achieve high capacity in the small form factor, while WD’s WhisperDrive technology with SoftSeek algorithms make this “the quietest 2.5-inch hard drive”. Also, the drive can perform a minimum of 600,000 load/unload cycles without contamination - “up to twice the performance of its competitors”, the company claims.

Fujitsu Computer Products of America today announced the MHW2160BH 2.5-inch laptop hard drive series featuring perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. Fujitsu MHW2160BH provides 160GB of storage space with 5400rpm rotational speed and SATA interface.

“The new Fujitsu MHW2160BH hard drive is an ideal solution for ultra-fast, high-capacity notebook computers. Developed using PMR technology, the mobile SATA hard disk drives achieve 80GB of storage per platter, among the highest in the industry with this rotation speed”, Fujitsu’s press release says.

Fujitsu Computer Products of America today announced the new Fujitsu MHW2080AT series of 2.5 inch laptop hard drives featuring up to 80GB capacity in a single platter, 4200rpm rotational speed and PATA interface.

“The new Fujitsu MHW2080AT series of hard disk drives are geared toward non-IT applications whose products have a longer life cycle. Featuring up to 80GB capacity in a single platter as well as low power consumption, the cost-efficient mobile HDDs also demonstrate best-in-class reduced acoustic noise, resulting in exceptionally quiet performance”, Fujitsu’s press release says.

Hitachi started shipping Travelstar 5K160, it’s new 2.5-inch hard drive with 160GB capacity. Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 is available with PATA or SATA inteface. The 5K160 is the first 160 GB laptop hard drive with SATA interface on the market, while Seagate also announced that it would ship 160 GB SATA 2.5-inch drive soon.

The Hitachi 5K160 PATA can be bought via many online computer stores, but we found 5K160 featuring SATA interface only at Mac Sales.

Toshiba Storage Device Division introduced the Toshiba MK2035GSS 200GB 2.5-inch HDD based on Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology. Toshiba’s second-generation PMR offering features the worlds highest areal density at 178.8 gigabits per square inch and the highest-capacity drive on the market in the standard 9.5mm mobile PC format.

Fujitsu recently announced the world’s first 200GB laptop hard drive. It’s MHV2200BT 2.5-inch SATA HDD which runs at 4200 rpm. MHV2200BT, the biggest laptop hard drive, has 8MB cache memory.

“Fujitsu developed the MHV2200BT to address growing demands for mobile hard disk drives with the performance and capacity required for external HDD products as well as high-end audio/video computing applications such as gaming, video editing, audio recording and DVR functionality”, Fujitsu’s press release says.
