The Open Pandora, a laptop-like handheld computer based on an OMAP processor and Linux OS will go into mass production next month, after four years of waiting, and is available for pre-order now.

Pandora’s design and features are based on suggestions and requests by open source comunity gathered on the gp32x forums. The device runs a modified version of Angstrom-Linux distro and is primarily oriented toward game emulations. It has a 4.3″ resistive-touch screen and game controls on the base, alongside the QWERTY keyboard.

CTL MB40U 14.1″ Laptop Offers Ubuntu OS, Intel Core CPUs

The CTL MB40U is a new Intel Core i-based laptop which features Ubuntu Linux operating system instead of Windows.

The 14.1-inch MB40U comes with Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot” 64-bit pre-installed, which includes with a wide range of free applications, including an office suite. The notebook is configurable with Core i processors ranging from i3-2330 to Core i7-2630QM. Customers can also choose 2 – 8GB of DDR3 memory, and up to 500GB of hard drive space or up to a 512GB solid state drive. There’s no info on optical drive in the specs sheet, but an ODD is present on the image of the MB40U. Intel’s HD integrated GPU is the only graphics choice.

Lemote Yeeloong 8101_B, 8089_B Netbooks Feature Chinese CPU, Linux

Today we spotted a pair of unique netbooks, the Lemote Yeeloong 8101_B and 8089_B, belonging to a quite unknown kind of netbooks. They don’t feature an Intel Atom or AMD Fusion processor, nor Windows OS and are not aimed at an average consumer. Instead, the geek-centric 10.1-inch Yeeloong 8101_B and and 8.9-inch 8089_B have the Loongson 2F China-made processor and GNU/Linux OS.

Loongson chips are based on MIPS architecture. The 2F runs at between 800 and 900MHz and is 64-bit compatible. It has a built-in video controller and a power consumption of 4W. It works in conjunction with DDR2 memory.

Ubuntu 11.10 vs Windows 7 Starter on Netbook – Benchmarks

Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot”, the latest version of the most popular Linux distribution among laptop PC users, is now available.

There are many improvements in the new version, including changes in Ubuntu’s Unity interface and various bug fixes. The 11.10 includes new themes and login screen, new features such as Deja Dup backup application, ability to sync installed apps across multiple computers via OneConf feature, and newer kernel version. The default browser is Firefox 7. When it comes to email, Mozilla Thunderbird replaces Evolution client.

Intel Launches AppUp Center Offering Apps for Netbooks

Intel AppUp CenterIntel Corp. has introduced availability of the Intel AppUp center, an application store for netbooks.

“The Intel AppUp center includes both free and paid apps for entertainment, social networking, gaming and productivity, optimized for a netbook’s mobility and screen size. To encourage consumers to try new applications, Intel AppUp provides “try before you buy” solutions, encouraging consumers to purchase apps they otherwise might not have,” the press relase says.

Ubuntu Linux to Get Multitouch Support

UbuntuCanonical’s Ubuntu Linux 10.10 OS, codenamed “Maverick Meerkat”, will support multitouch gestures.

“Our multi-touch work began in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, when we worked to get additional touch hardware supported in the Linux kernel, particularly the Dell XT2, HP tx2 tablets and the Lenovo T410s laptops. With that in place, and active development in X well under way, we reviewed our options for gesture recognition in Linux. The Maverick cycle has seen us produce several prototypes for gesture recognition software and the Ubuntu archives now include the results of that effort,” says Canonical.

Jolicloud 1.0Jolicloud 1.0, a free cloud computing-based operating system for netbooks is now available for download.

Jolicloud is Internet and social networking-centric and is based on Linux OS, combined with an HTML user interface. It comes with pre-installed applications, such as Gmail, Skype, Twitter, Firefox, and more. The OS has access to App Center with more than 700 free apps.

Acer Launches Dual-Boot Android/XP AOD250 Netbook

Acer Aspire One AOD250Acer has announced a dual-boot version of the Aspire One AOD250 netbook, which includes Adroid and Windows XP operating systems.

Android is a lightweight Linux-based open source OS designed specifically for mobile devices. Acer says that Android allows the Aspire One netbook to boot up and shut down quickly with “instant on” Internet connectivity.

Google Introduces Chrome OS

Google ChromeGoogle has introduced the Chrome Operating System, an open source, free of charge, lightweight OS that will initially be targeted at netbook computers.

“Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010,” a post on Google’s official blog says.

StreamMyGame Enables Crysis, Quake 4 on Netbooks, UMPCs

StreamMyGameStreamMyGame.com announced recently that their streaming software now enables users to play intense 3D games on netbooks and ultra-mobile PCs, such as the Asus Eee PC, HP 2133, or Samsung Q1 Ultra.

Community website’s staff explains that the PC game’s video and audio are captured in real-time and sent over the Internet to a remote device, while the keyboard input at the remote device is sent back to the PC and used to control the game.
