Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) - Even Smaller than UMPCs
Five Intel Atom CPUs Launched
Intel Corporation today introduced the first five Intel Atom processors and Centrino Atom platform for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and embedded computing solutions.
The five Atom processors, codenamed “Silverthorne”, are the Z500 with 800MHz clock speed, Z510 at 1.1GHz, Z520 at 1.33GHz, Z530 at 1.6GHz, and Z540 at 1.86GHz. Power consumption of “Intel’s smallest and the world’s fastest chip under 3 watts” ranges from 0.65W to 2.4W, depending on model. All of the announced Atom CPUs have 512KB of L2 cache. The lower end z500 and z510 have a 400MHz front side bus, while the others feature a 533MHz FSB.

Intel Atom Processor Benchmarked
German website ComputerBase has published the first benchmark of the upcoming Intel Atom processor, codenamed “Silverthorne”, which is designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices and Ultra-Mobile PCs.
According to the Super PI test result, the Atom at 1.6GHz is a little bit faster than the old Intel Pentium III-M “Tualatin” at 1.13GHz, but slower than the laptop-use Intel Celeron M “Dothan-512″ at 900MHz, utilized in the Asus Eee PC. However, Super PI is a single-threaded application, while the “Silverthorne” CPUs incorporate HyperThreading technology for improved performance of multi-threaded software.
Intel Announces Atom CPU, Centrino Atom Platform for MIDs/UMPCs
Intel announced yesterday that its upcoming processors codenamed “Silverthorn” and “Diamondville”, designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and Ultra-Moble PCs, are officially named the Intel Atom. The corresponding “Menlow” MID/UMPC platform is called the Intel Centrino Atom, the chip maker published.
Lenovo Showcases Its MID Device
Although Lenovo was expected to introduce its first Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) at the ongoing 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company showcased the Mobile Internet Device (MID) instead.
The Lenovo MID, which is one of the first of these devices, is based on the Intel “Menlow” platform and features a 4.8-inch touchscreen display, a phone dialing pad apparently, a built-in camera, and a Linux-based user interface.
Intel Introduces Next Generation UMPC, MID Platforms
Intel has showed the upcoming Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) and Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform, codenamed “Menlow“, during its Developer Forum 2007 in San Francisco. The new platform is scheduled for launch in the first half 2008 and is comprised of the “Silverthorne” 45-nanometer processor and the “Poulsbo” chipset, which is based on a single-chip design.
Intel Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, A100/A110 CPUs Announced
Intel today officially annnounced the Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, formerly codenamed “McCaslin”, designed for use in Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPC) and in Mobile Internet Devices (MID). This second-generation ultra-mobile platform uses Intel’s new A100 and A110 processors, 945GU Express Chipset, and ICH7 I/O Controller Hub.
Intel A100 and A110 processors, codenamed “Stealey” are clocked at 600MHz and 800MHz, respectively. Both feature 400MHz front-side bus and 512KB of L2 cache, as well as thermal design power (TDP) of 3W.
Intel to Unveil Linux-Based Mobile Internet Device (MID) Platform
Intel will introduce its Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing this week. The MIDs will feature embedded Linux operating system and from 4-inch to 6-inch touch-screen displays providing from 800 x 480 to 1024 x 600 resolution, according to Intel’s document.
The RedFlag MIDINUX Linux distribution used in Mobile Internet Device will provide these small computers with communication applications such as Firefox web-browser, e-mail client, RSS news reader, instant messaging and VoIP software, as well as with various multimedia applications.
