Nvidia Prepares MCP79 Chipset for Intel-Based Notebooks

NVIDIANvidia is going to release the MCP79, a new single-chip integrated chipset for “small form factor” notebooks with Intel’s processors, DailyTech reports.

“Each variant of MCP79 incorporates a DX10-capable GeForce graphics controller supporting Shader Model 4.0, NVIDIA’s VP3 video processor, and support for Hybrid Power/Hybrid SLI/Hybrid Performance,” the report says.

VIA Introduces VX800 Series Chipsets for Laptops, UMPCs

VIA VX800 SeriesVIA Technologies, Inc has announced the new VIA VX800 Series laptop and ultra mobile PC chipsets, “featuring the latest video, graphics and connectivity performance in a single chip measuring just 33×33mm”.

“The VIA VX800 Series comprises two primary digital media IGP chipsets, the VIA VX800 for ultra thin and light notebooks, mini PCs and embedded devices, and the ultra low voltage VIA VX800U for the fast-expanding ultra mobile market, including the rapidly-emerging mini-note, UMPC and UMD markets,” the press release says.

Intel Announces Atom CPU, Centrino Atom Platform for MIDs/UMPCs

Intel Atom, Centrino AtomIntel announced yesterday that its upcoming processors codenamed “Silverthorn” and “Diamondville”, designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and Ultra-Moble PCs, are officially named the Intel Atom. The corresponding “Menlow” MID/UMPC platform is called the Intel Centrino Atom, the chip maker published.

Intel Montevina Integrated GPUs up to 2X Faster

IntelIntel’s next-generation Centrino 2 notebook platform, codenamed “Montevina“, will be available with both high performance and mainstream integrated graphics processors, incorporated into the GM47 and GM45 chipsets respectively, VR-Zone reports.

“Intel GM47 Express chipset will be the highest end mobile part clocking at 640MHz for the integrated graphics while the GM45 Express chipset clocks in at 533MHz. Both chipsets are based on the Intel GMA X4500HD graphics that enhances HD experience with native HD-DVD and Blu-Ray support. Intel GM47 chipset delivers up to 2X the performance in 3DMark over the (current) GM965 chipset and has broader DX10 game compatibility and support,” the report says.

Intel’s Next-Gen Laptop Platform to be Named Centrino 2

IntelIntel’s next-generation notebook platform codenamed “Montevina” will be called “Centrino 2“, DigiTimes reports according to sources at laptop manufacturers.

The chip maker has used the Centrino brand name for four generations of its notebook platforms including “Carmel”, “Sonoma”, “Napa”, and current “Santa Rosa” and “Santa Rosa Refresh”. This unchanging brand name has left consumers unable to identify the differences between laptop platforms reportedly. The new marketing strategy should give consumers the feeling of a tangible upgrade and will hopefully spur replacement demand, according to the report.

Intel Shelton’08 Low-Cost Laptop Platform Coming in 3Q

IntelIntel is going to release the “Shelton’08″ low-cost notebook platform in the third quarter 2008, according to DigiTimes’ sources at PC makers.

The “Shelton’08″ features the Intel “Diamondville” single core processor at 1.6GHz, a 533MHz front-side bus, the 945GSE chipset with integrated DirecX 9 graphics chip, single channel DDR2 memory support, an 802.11g Wi-Fi module, and a USB/PATA solid state drive. The platform is claimed to have low power consumption, enabling battery life of between 3-4 hours.

AMD LIVE! Ultra Notebooks Coming in H2 2008

AMD LIVE! ExplorerLeading OEMs and system builders worldwide are expected to start introducing AMD LIVE! Ultra notebook PCs, based on the upcoming “Puma” mobile platform, during the second half of 2008, AMD announced this week at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The AMD LIVE! Ultra is the company’s new brand, “designed to help consumers fully enjoy The Ultimate Visual Experience”. Laptop and desktop systems based on this technology provide high-definition video, capability to view multiple video streams simultaneously, and energy-efficient design and the scalability to meet varying performance needs of entertainment applications, according to an AMD’s press release.

Intel Unveils Penryn Mobile CPUs, Santa Rosa Refresh Platform

Intel PenrynIntel Corporation officially unveiled today their first five 45 nanometer (nm) processors, codenamed “Penryn“, which are a part of the new Intel Centrino platform for laptops, codenamed “Santa Rosa Refresh“.

“All of these new chips include the company’s new transistor formula and 45nm manufacturing process that boost a PC’s speed, reduces power requirements, saves on battery life, helps the environment and comes in smaller packages for more fashionable and compact computer designs,” Intel’s press release says.

AMD Shrike Laptop Platform Coming in 2009, Features APU

AMDIn 2009, AMD will release the “Shrike” notebook platform featuring Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), which combines general-use CPU cores with specialized accelerator cores on a single silicon die, according to the company’s Notebook Platform Roadmap 2008/2009.

The first APU for laptops, codenamed “Swift”, will consist of AMD “Stars” CPU cores and a graphics processing unit core. The “Swift” chips will be produced using 45 nanometer technology and will be paired with DDR3 system memory in the “Shrike” platform.

Intel “Santa Rosa Refresh” Brings Penryn CPUs, HD Decoder

Intel PenrynIntel has officially confirmed launch of the “Santa Rosa Refresh” notebook platform in January next year. It is an update to Intel Centrino processor technology that includes the next-generation 45 nanometer (nm) Core 2 mobile processor codenamed “Penryn” and improved graphics capabilities, the chip maker announced.

Intel “Santa Rosa Refresh”-based notebooks are claimed to deliver “improved platform performance and great battery life”. Regarding graphics, improvement focuses on HD DVD and Blu-Ray support with an optional third-party decoder, as well as enhanced content and gaming capabilities, according to the company’s Pre-CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2008 Briefing.

Five Intel’s 45nm Laptop CPUs Coming in January 2008

IntelIntel will launch in January 2008 five 45-nanometer dual core laptop processors, designed for use in the chip maker’s “Santa Rosa Refresh” laptop platform, DigiTimes reports.

These 45nm CPUs, codenamed “Penryn“, will have the model names: X9000 for 2.8GHz CPU, T9500 for 2.6GHz, T9300 for 2.5GHz, T8300 for 2.4GHz, and T8100 for 2.1GHz and be priced at US$851, US$530, US$316, US$241 and US$209 in 1000-unit tray quantities, respectively.

IntelIn January 2008, Intel will launch “Santa Rosa Refresh“, an update to its current Centrino laptop platform. The Refresh will include “Penryn”, the mobile processor produced using 45nm technology, and improved graphics capabilities, the chip maker announced during the ongoing Intel Developer Forum 2007 in San Francisco.

AMD Confirms ‘Puma’ Launch in 2008; ‘Fusion’ Coming in 2009

AMDAMD confirmed it still aims to launch the notebook platform codenamed “Puma“, incorporating “Griffin” processors and the RS780M chipset, in 2008. In addition, the company announced during its Asia Analyst Tour it will launch in 2009 the “Eagle” platform featuring the “Falcon”, the first “Fusion” processor with a CPU and a GPU core in a single package.

The chip maker said earlier the “Puma” platform will provide longer battery life, graphics and video processing enhancements, and improvement in overall system performance. One of the main innovations in the “Puma’s” RS780M chipset will be the PowerXpress technology for dynamic switching between an integrated and a discrete graphics to extend battery life.

Intel “Penryn” Mobile CPUs Coming in Q1 2008

IntelIntel “Penryn” mobile processors, the first notebook CPUs produced using 45 nanometer technology, are expected to be released in the first quarter of 2008, along with refreshed “Santa Rosa” laptop platform supporting these chips, DailyTech reports.

Intel’s roadmap has revealed the details of the chipmaker’s five upcoming Core 2 “Penryn” mobile processors. The first two of these unnamed models are entry-level Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs with 2.1GHz and 2.4GHz clock speeds respectively and 3MB of L2 cache. Another two are higher-end Core 2 Duos at 2.5GHz and 2.6GHz with 6MB of L2 cache, while the fifth is Core 2 Extreme “Penryn” at 2.8GHz, also with 6MB L2 cache. In addition, it has an unlocked multiplier for overclocking. All of these processors have 800MHz frontside bus.

Sony: Windows Vista Does Not Support Intel Turbo Memory

Intel Turbo MemorySony will not include Intel Turbo Memory technology in their line of VAIO notebooks scheduled for release this summer, because Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system is not currently Turbo Memory compatible, the computer maker’s representative announced. On the other side, Microsoft has denied Sony’s claims.
