The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project with partner Marvell has unveiled the OLPC XO-3 tablet at the CES 2012. The XO-3 is the next generation of the OLPC computers, which began with the XO-1 mini laptop. The tablet features Android or OLPC’s Linux Sugar OS, a 8-inch 1024×768 PixelQi display (no info on multi-touch support), the Marvell Armada PXA618 SoC, 512MB of system memory, a memory card slot, USB and audio ports, a solar panel (!), and it is waterproof.

Microsoft Develops Windows XP for OLPC XO Laptop

OLPC's Microsoft has announced that it is working on a version of Windows XP operating system that can run on computers without a hard drive, including the One Laptop per Child XO notebook, CNet reports.

The software maker said that it will start “limited field trials” of XP running on the OLPC XO in January.

OLPC Extends Give One Get One Program

OLPC XOThe non-profit organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC) announced today it is extending its recently launched Give One Get One program beyond the initial two-week limited time offer through December 31, 2007, in the USA and Canada.

“In the past 10 days, we’ve experienced an outpouring of support from the public that is truly gratifying and encouraging,” said Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child. “Because so many people have asked for more time to participate either individually or in order to organize local and national groups to which they belong, we have decided to extend Give One Get One through the end of this year. During this extended period we will solicit input and transition to a program of giving only at the beginning of 2008. We want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to act upon the giving spirit of the holiday season.”

OLPC XO Laptop Now Available in the U.S.

OLPC XO LaptopStarting today, the OLPC’s XO laptop is available for purchase in the United States through the “Give One Get One” program.

“Between November 12 and November 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During this time, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution”, the non-profit organization One Laptop per Child says.

EA Donates SimCity Game to OLPC Laptops

SimCity (1989)Electronic Arts (EA) today announced it will donate the original SimCity — the blockbuster 1989 game — to each computer in the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) initiative.

“By gifting SimCity onto each OLPC laptop, EA is providing users with an entertaining way to engage with computers as well as help develop decision-making skills while honing creativity. This is the first time a major video game publisher has gifted a game to the world,” EA says.

OLPC Announced Commercial Availability of XO Laptop

Cambodian Schoolchildren Using the XOThe non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) announced today commercial availability of its XO laptop, initially aimed to help education of children in developing countries.

“Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptops – one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home”, Founder and Chairman of One Laptop Per Child Nicholas Negroponte said in a statement.

OLPC Announced Final Beta Version of XO Laptop

OLPC's One Laptop per Child (OLPC) organization today announced it has authorized mass production of the XO laptop, based on the release of the final Beta-4 (B4) engineering model.

“This triggers the supply chains of 800 parts that come together and rollout off the assembly line in October,” the OLPC’s press release says.
