OLPC Announces XO 2.0, 1.5
Non-profit organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC) has unveiled the XO 2.0 or XOXO, a prototype of the second generation XO laptop.
The XO 2.0 notebook for children has two touch-screens, a reduced power consumption from 2-4 watts to 1 watt, and a smaller size than the original XO, InfoSync World reports.
Intel Leaves OLPC Project
Intel has announced that it leaves the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project, aimed to distribute low-cost notebooks to children in developing countries.
The chip maker, said that that its decision to leave the project came because the founder of the One Laptop Per Child program Nicolas Negroponte asked it to quit selling a competing low-cost computer - the Classmate PC.

Microsoft Develops Windows XP for OLPC XO Laptop
Microsoft has announced that it is working on a version of Windows XP operating system that can run on computers without a hard drive, including the One Laptop per Child XO notebook, CNet reports.
The software maker said that it will start “limited field trials” of XP running on the OLPC XO in January.

OLPC Extends Give One Get One Program
The non-profit organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC) announced today it is extending its recently launched Give One Get One program beyond the initial two-week limited time offer through December 31, 2007, in the USA and Canada.
“In the past 10 days, we’ve experienced an outpouring of support from the public that is truly gratifying and encouraging,” said Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child. “Because so many people have asked for more time to participate either individually or in order to organize local and national groups to which they belong, we have decided to extend Give One Get One through the end of this year. During this extended period we will solicit input and transition to a program of giving only at the beginning of 2008. We want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to act upon the giving spirit of the holiday season.”
OLPC XO Laptop Now Available in the U.S.
Starting today, the OLPC’s XO laptop is available for purchase in the United States through the “Give One Get One” program.
“Between November 12 and November 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During this time, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution”, the non-profit organization One Laptop per Child says.
EA Donates SimCity Game to OLPC Laptops
Electronic Arts (EA) today announced it will donate the original SimCity — the blockbuster 1989 game — to each computer in the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) initiative.
“By gifting SimCity onto each OLPC laptop, EA is providing users with an entertaining way to engage with computers as well as help develop decision-making skills while honing creativity. This is the first time a major video game publisher has gifted a game to the world,” EA says.

T-Mobile Gives HotSpot Service for Free to OLPC Laptop Buyers
T-Mobile will give one year of complimentary T-Mobile HotSpot access to people who donate an OLPC XO laptop to a child in a developing country through the Give One Get One campaign.
The Give One Get One campaign by non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child will last from November 12 to November 26. During this period, people can donate $399 for two laptops. One laptop will be given to a child in the developing world. The other laptop will be sent to the donor along with information on how to activate the one year of complimentary T-Mobile HotSpot service.
OLPC XO Laptop Faces Production Delay
The non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) has announced that its low-cost XO notebook computer for poor children faces a production delay, which would cause a shortage of these computers available in the United States and Canada as part of a holiday giving program.
According to the report, it would now be tough to get those laptops to South America by December, and also meet orders for the recently announced OLPC’s Give 1 Get 1 scheme for people in the United States and Canada, said Mary Lou Jepsen, chief technology officer for the OLPC Foundation.
Intel to Unveil CPU for OLPC XO Laptop Next Year
Intel plans to unveil a new processor for the One Laptop Per Child’s (OLPC) XO notebook and other ultra-low cost laptops at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai next April, Info World reports.
“No current Intel microprocessors fit the requirements of the OLPC, which uses a processor from Advanced Micro Devices, so Intel will design a new architecture specifically for the ultra-low cost laptop category”, said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the mobile platforms group at Intel.
Asus Eee PC Shipments Delayed
Asustek is expected to delay shipments of its ASUS Eee PC low-cost laptops to the end of October, DigiTimes reports.
According to channel distributors, the Eee PC was originally expected to hit the market in the third week of September. However, as the company expects to gain more power in the market and to expand its software applications, Asustek decided to postpone its schedule, said the distributors.

OLPC Announced Commercial Availability of XO Laptop
The non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) announced today commercial availability of its XO laptop, initially aimed to help education of children in developing countries.
“Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptops - one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home”, Founder and Chairman of One Laptop Per Child Nicholas Negroponte said in a statement.
OLPC’s XO Laptop to Cost $188
One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) has announced this week that its XO laptop, aimed at education of children in developing countries, will cost $188 when mass production begins this fall. The initially announced price of $100 is a long-term goal, according to the nonprofit organization.
The last price OLPC announced for the XO was $176. The nonprofit blames the increase to $188 on a variety of factors, including currency fluctuations and rising costs of such components as nickel and silicon.

OLPC XO May Sell Commercially by Crhistmas
The OLPC XO notebook, aimed to help the education of children in developing countries, may be also available commercially by Christmas, the One Laptop Per Child Foundation’s chief technology officer Mary Lou Jepsen said yesterday.
The XO computer could sell initially for about $350, or twice its production cost, although the OLPC is also considering a higher price tag reportedly. This laptop, which was initially planed to cost $100 for developing countries, has reached the non-commercial $175 price tag.

OLPC Announced Final Beta Version of XO Laptop
One Laptop per Child (OLPC) organization today announced it has authorized mass production of the XO laptop, based on the release of the final Beta-4 (B4) engineering model.
“This triggers the supply chains of 800 parts that come together and rollout off the assembly line in October,” the OLPC’s press release says.

Intel Joins OLPC Project
Chip maker Intel and non-profit organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC) today announced they have agreed to work together “to bring the benefits of technology to the developing world through synergy of their respective programs”.
Under the agreement, Intel and OLPC will explore collaborations involving technology and educational content. In addition, Intel will join the board of OLPC.
