Solid State Drives (SSDs) are date storage devices based on NAND Flash memory. They are less power hungry and usually faster than the standard laptop hard drives.

Lexar Media Launches Crucial M225 SSDs

Crucial M225Lexar Media has announced the Crucial M225 2.5-inch solid state drive series, featuring read speeds up to 250MB/sec and write speeds up to 200MB/sec.

The “fastest, highest capacity Crucial SSDs to date” are available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities, currently priced at $169.99, $329.99, and $599.99 respectively. The drives use MLC NAND flash technology and a SATA2 3Gb/s interface.

Higher-End MacBook Pro Gets CPU Upgrades

Intel Core 2 Duo - MacBookThe higher-end 15-inch MacBook Pro model now comes standard with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz processor, which is an upgrade from 2.53GHz, Apple Insider reports.

The 2.66GHz MacBook Pro MC026LL/A, priced at $2,499, can be additionally upgraded to 2.93GHz for $300. The 2.93GHz option replaces the previous 2.8GHz upgrade.

Toshiba Announces 512GB SSD

Toshiba 512GB SSDToshiba has announced a 2.5-inch 512GB solid state drive, based on 43 nanometer Multi-Level Cell NAND technology.

In addition to the THNS512GG8BB 512GB drive, the new SSD family also includes capacities of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, offered in 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch drive enclosures or as SSD Flash Modules.

SanDisk ExtremeFFS to Improve SSD Write Speeds ‘up to 100 Times’

SanDisk has unveiled this week ExtremeFFS, a new file system for solid-state drives that is expected to bring big improvements in their performance and reliability.

The next-generation patented flash management system has the potential to accelerate random write speeds by up to 100 times over existing systems, SanDisk says.

Intel Announces X18-M, X25-M 80GB SSDs

IntelIntel announced this week it has begun shipping the X18-M and X25-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives for laptop and desktop computers.

The 1.8-inch X18-M and 2.5-inch X25-M are based on multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash technology and are available in 80GB capacities. Their read and write speeds are up to 250MB per second and up to 70MB/s respectively. Samples of upcoming 160GB versions will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

Buffalo Announces 32GB, 64GB SSDs for Asus Eee PCBuffalo Technology has announced the new 32GB and 64GB solid state drives, as replacements for lower capacity SSDs in the Asus Eee PC ultraportable notebooks.

The 32GB SHD-EP9M32G is expected to cost around $156, while the 64GB SHD-EP9M64G will have a $316 price tag.

Samsung’s 128GB MLC SSDs Now in Volume Production

Samsung 128GB SSDSamsung Electronics announced today that it has begun mass producing 1.8- and 2.5-inch multi-level cell (MLC) solid state drives (SSD) with a 128GB storage capacity.

The new Samsung MLC NAND flash memory-based SSDs have a write speed of 70MB/s and a read speed of 90MB/s. The drives feature a Serial ATA 2 (3Gb/s) interface.

“Core series SSD drives are available in capacities of 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB and deliver incredible 120-143Mbs/ 80-93Mbs read/write speeds and seek times of less than 0.35ms, making the Core series up to 10x as fast on a seek-time basis and up to 40% faster on a R/W basis that the best performing 2.5-inhc HDDs on the market, all while consuming 50% less power,” the company says.

Toshiba Portege R500-S5007VToshiba yesterday announced the addition of a 128GB solid state drive (SSD) into the Portege R500 12.1-inch ultraportable laptop.

“Toshiba’s 2.4 pound Portege R500-S5007V is the world’s lightest laptop with a 128GB SSD and DVD SuperMulti drive and one of the world’s thinnest with a SSD and DVD SuperMulti drive,” the press release says.

Intel High Performance SSDs to be Part of Centrino 2

IntelIntel is planning to launch the High Performance SSD solid state drive products by the end of the third quarter this year. The chip maker will bundle the SSDs as a part of its upcoming Centrino 2 “Montevina” laptop platform, DigiTimes’ sources at PC makers say.

The first Intel High Performance SSDs will feature 80GB of storage space and SATA interface and will come in two versions: Client X25-M with 2.5-inch form factor and 1.8-inch Client X18-M.

Super Talent MasterDrive MX, DXSuper Talent today launched a new line of MasterDrive solid state drives (SSDs), featuring a 2.5-inch form factor, SATA II (3Gbps) interface, and data storage capacities from 30GB to 120GB.

The memory maker’s MasterDrive MX and MasterDrive DX solid state drive series feature 120/40 MB/sec and 120/70 MB/sec read/write speeds respectively.

OCZ Unveils Ultra-Fast SSDs

OCZ SATA II 2.5 SSDOCZ Technology has unveiled OCZ SATA II 2.5-inch Solid State Drives, an “ultra-fast, lightweight and efficient alternative” to conventional hard disc drives for notebooks.

The new solid state drives feature 120MB/s read and 100MB/s write speeds and come with capacities of 32GB (OCZSSD2-1S32G) and 64GB (OCZSSD2-1S64G). The SSDs have a lightweight brushed alloy housing, and two million hour mean time before failure (MTBF).

Intel Z-P140 PATA SSDIntel has announced the Z-P140 PATA solid state drive, which is “smaller than a penny and weighs less than a drop of water”.

“The tiniest in the industry, the Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD is designed for ultra-small mobile internet devices, digital entertainment and embedded applications and is part of the proposed Intel “Menlow” platform. The Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD comes in 2 Gigabyte (GB) and 4GB densities, extendable to 16GB,” the chip maker says.

Toshiba Enters Solid State Drive Market

Toshiba Solid State DrivesToshiba has announced its first lineup of solid state drives (SSDs), based on NAND flash memory and designed primarily for use in notebook computers.

Toshiba’s first SSDs will be available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities and will provide low power consumption, a faster boot time, and light weight, when compared to standard hard drives.

Micron Announces RealSSD Solid State Drives

Micron RealSSDMicron Technology has announced the RealSSD family of solid state drive products, which includes notebook- and desktop computer-use 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch models with 32GB and 64GB capacities.

Micron’s RealSSD solid state drives feature a SATA2 interface and a rugged, lightweight plastic casing, allowing for “at least a 50-percent reduction in weight when compared to similar density HDDs”. The RealSSDs consume less than 2 watts of power while active an even lower consumption in idle and standby modes.
