Solid State Drives (SSDs) are date storage devices based on NAND Flash memory. They are less power hungry and usually faster than the standard laptop hard drives.
Samsung’s 1.8″ SSDs to Store 512GB of Data
Samsung Electronics has announced that it has developed the first 30-nanometer 64 Gigabit (Gb) Flash memory chip. This will enable the company to produce a 1.8-inch solid state drive with 512GB of data storage capacity, TG Daily reports.
Also, 16 of these 30nm 64 Gb NAND Flash chips (one chip represents 8GB of storage) can be packed into a memory card form factor, such as SD or CF-II, providing 128GB of capacity.
Dell, Alienware to Offer Samsung’s 64GB SSDs in Laptops
Samsung Electronics announced yesterday that its 64GB 2.5-inch SATA solid state drive (SSD) will be available in Dell and Alienware consumer laptops.
“Alienware will provide a 128GB SSD configuration, by offering dual 64GB SSD drives in a RAID 0 array, as well as a single 64GB SSD combined with a large capacity 200GB 7200RPM drive, available on the powerful Area-51 m9750 gaming notebook. Dell is offering the SSD drive on its premium XPS M1330 ultra-portable notebook, and expects to make it available across additional XPS systems, as well as Latitude corporate notebooks and Dell Precision mobile workstations later this year,” Samsung announced.
HP to Add 64GB SSD Option to Compaq Business Laptops
Hewlett-Packard has announced that it will offer Flash memory-based 64GB solid state drives in its HP Compaq 2710p Tablet PCs, the HP Compaq 2510p ultraportable laptops, as well as in the HP Compaq 6910p and the HP Compaq 8000 series notebooks.
According to HP, the solid state drive’s shock resistance helps improve the notebook’s reliability, while its decreased power consumption, when compared to traditional hard drives, improves battery life. SSDs also offer improved performance and up to 25 percent weight savings, HP says.

Sandisk uSSD 5000 - Small, Economical Hard Drive Substitute
SanDisk Corporation has announced the uSSD 5000 solid state drive (SSD). It can be used as an economical substitute for hard disk drives in sub-$250 PCs, such as Intel-powered classmate PCs, according to manufacturer.
“SanDisk’s uSSD 5000 solid state drive is a USB module designed to be embedded directly onto the motherboard of low-cost PCs as a hard disk replacement. The uSSD 5000 solid state drive supports a variety of operating systems, including Microsoft’s Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded, Windows Embedded for Point of Service and Windows CE, as well as Linux. The uSSD 5000 solid state drive is expected to be available in capacities from 2GB to 8GB,” the company’s press release says.
Alienware Offers Notebooks with Solid State Drives
Alienware has added solid state drive (SSD) options to its notebook PCs. The offered SSD choices include 32GB units, as well as 64GB RAID 0 option with two 32GB drives.
These Flash memory-based Serial ATA drives are available on the 17-inch Area-51 m9750 and Aurora m9700 laptops, as well as on the 15.4-inch Area-51 m5550.
Transcend Announced 32GB ExpressCard/34 Solid State Disk
Transcend Information, Inc. announced today its latest Flash memory-based 32GB solid state drive compatible with ExpressCard/34 slot, which is commonly used in newer notebook computers.
“Transcend’s ExpressCard/34 SSD is a smaller and faster plug-in module solution that supports USB 2.0 and PCI Express Applications, and perfectly matches mobile and desktop systems. The ExpressCard/34 SSD is compatible with Windows Vista and supports ReadyBoost function. Moreover, Transcend’s ExpressCard/34 SSD comes bundled with a portable USB adapter, which makes it work as a regular USB flash drive,” the company’s press release says.
SanDisk Announced 64GB Solid State Drives
SanDisk Corporation has announced at Computex 2007 show in Taipei its 64-gigabyte 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch solid state drives (SSDs), which can be used as a replacement for notebooks’ standard hard drives.
“Laptop manufacturers have requested more memory capacity for systems that use the Microsoft Vista platform, which can require a number of preloaded accessories and security suites,” said Doreet Oren, SanDisk director of SSD product marketing. “Also, there is interest in developing laptops for gaming, and the SSD is well-suited for the performance and memory requirements of those users. Thus, by offering greater capacities on our SSD products, we are making our products more appealing to a wider customer base.”
PQI Announced 256GB Solid State Drive
Power Quotient International (PQI) has announced the 2.5-inch 256GB SSD Turbo+ solid state drive, which is the product with the largest storage capacity in this class.
The PQI 256GB SSD Turbo+ has Serial ATA interface and data transfer rates of up to 60MB/sec. It can be a replacement for a standard notebook hard drive, offering shock resistance, high stability and low power consumption. The SSDs also have longer average data storage time of 10 years and faster seek times compared to traditional hard drive read / write heads, according to PQI.
Dell Latitude D420, D620 ATG Now with SSD
Dell today announced that it is offering a 1.8-inch 32GB solid state drive (SSD) from SanDisk on Latitude D420 ultra-mobile and D620 ATG semi-rugged notebooks.
“Dell sees potential for flash-based drives and is committing to offer them across next generation Latitude notebooks because they enable better reliability, increased performance and noise reduction”, according to press release.
Transcend Unveiled 2.5-Inch IDE Solid State Drive Line-Up
Transcend has announced this week its flash memory-based 2.5-inch IDE Solid State Drive (SSD) line-up, featuring models with 32GB, 16GB and 8GB capacities.
Transcend’s 2.5-inch solid state drives with IDE interface have a metal case and anti-shock features for improved reliability. In addition, these SSDs have built-in ECC (Error Correction Code) functionality that “ensures highly reliable data transfer and increases your systems energy efficiency”. The new drives, which are designed to replace standard 2.5-inch hard disks in notebook computers, are also claimed to have low power consumption.
Transcend ExpressCard/34 SSD Announced
The flash memory maker Transcend today announced its ExpressCard/34 SSD series. This flash memory-based solid-state disk, which fits in notebook’s ExpressCard/34 slot, comes with 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 16GB storage capacities.
According to Transcend, the ExpressCard/34 SSD provides low power consumption, “which makes it perfect for use as a mobile storage solution in notebook computers with ExpressCard slot”. Transcend’s new flash memory device supports ReadyBoost function in Windows Vista operating system and comes bundled with a portable USB adapter, which makes it work as a regular USB flash drive.
Samsung’s 64GB 1.8-Inch SSD Announced
Samsung Electronics announced today that it has developed a 1.8-inch 64GB flash memory-based solid state drive (SSD) at its annual Mobile Solution Forum in Taipei. The new flash-SSD is based on an eight gigabit single-level-cell (SLC) NAND, which provides significantly higher performance over conventional SSDs, according to company.
“The read and write performance of the new SLC flash-SSD have been increased by 20 percent and 60 percent respectively over the 32GB flash-SSD Samsung introduced last year, meaning that the new SSD’s ability to outperform conventional rotating-media hard drives is even greater than had been anticipated,” the press release says.
Fujitsu LifeBooks P1610, B6210 Now with SSD and Rugged Case
Fujitsu Computer Systems today announced that its LifeBook P1610 and LifeBook B6210 ultra-portable pen-enabled notebooks will offer an option for a solid-state drive (SSD), the NAND flash-based replacement for traditional hard disk drives.
“The 2.2-pound LifeBook P1610 convertible touch screen notebook and 3.2-pound LifeBook B6210 touch screen notebook are now offered with two flash-based SSD configurations, 16 GB or 32 GB. SSDs offer lower power consumption, added ruggedness, high reliability, and improved performance,” Fujitsu says.
SanDisk Released 32GB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive
SanDisk Corporation today released SSD SATA 5000 2.5-Inch, its new flash memory-based solid state drive with 32GB of data storage capacity, as a drop-in replacement for traditional laptop hard disk drives.
Along with 2.5-inch form factor and a Serial ATA interface, the new SanDisk SSD offers “six times” greater reliability than standard HDDs, as well as faster system boot times, better power efficiency and cool and quiet operation, since this drive has no moving parts found in hard drives.
