Sony: Windows Vista Does Not Support Intel Turbo Memory
Sony will not include Intel Turbo Memory technology in their line of VAIO notebooks scheduled for release this summer, because Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system is not currently Turbo Memory compatible, the computer maker’s representative announced. On the other side, Microsoft has denied Sony’s claims.
Sony VAIO CR Announced
Sony today introduced VAIO CR 14.1-inch entertainment notebook series, featuring Intel “Santa Rosa” mobile platform and “eye-popping colors and a chic design”.
Sony VAIO CR is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processor and based on the Intel GM965 chipset with integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. The notebook’s 14.1″ widescreen display provides 1280-by-800 pixel resolution. Sony VAIO CR supports up to 4GB of system memory and comes with up to 200GB hard drive, which is available in select models. It has a built-in DVD burner.
Sony VAIO BX740, BX760 Details Unveiled
Sony Business Solutions website has published the details of new Sony VAIO BX740 and BX760 business-class notebooks, both based on Intel “Santa Rosa” platform and Centrino Duo technology.
The latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, ranging from T7100 at 1.8GHz to T7700 at 2.4GHz, power the 14.1-inch VAIO BX740 series and the 15.4-inch BX760 series. These laptops feature Intel GM965 chipset paired with integrated Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 or PM965 chipset with ATI Mobility Radeon HD2300 dedicated graphics card. Both systems support up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, and come with up to 200GB hard drive spinning at 5400rpm. Sony VAIO BX740 and BX760 have DVD burners.
Sony VAIO FZ Introduced
Sony today announced 15.4-inch 1280 x 800 widescreen VAIO FZ multimedia notebook PC series, based on new Intel “Santa Rosa” platform.
Sony VAIO FZ series features the full range of new Intel Core 2 Duo processors, up to 4GB of main memory, and up to 250GB of hard drive capacity. There are an integrated Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 or NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT video options. The select VAIO FZ models feature Blu-ray Disc writers and HDMI outputs.

Sony VAIO Laptop Line to Be Refreshed in July
Sony will refresh its notebook PC line in July with a new 15.4-inch, 13.3-inch and 11.1-inch widescreen VAIO FZ, VAIO SZ5 and VAIO TZ series, according to forum members on NotebookReview web site. In addition, a widescreen 14-inch VAIO CR laptop and another 13.3-inch widescreen series - CZ - are rumored to come out at the same time.
The specifications summaries of forthcoming Sony VAIO notebooks indicate that FZ series will feature Intel’s next generation “Santa Rosa” platform and the new Core 2 Duo “Merom” processors, a 2GB of main memory, and up to 200GB hard drive.
Sony VAIO G1 Now with Solid State Disk
Sony has added a flash-memory based 32GB solid-state disk (SSD) option to its VAIO G1 12.1-inch screen ultra-portable laptop, the Japanese website Impress reports.
When configured with solid state disk instead of with hard drive, the Sony Vaio G1’s battery life is extended for 30 minutes, and lasts for up to 6.5 hours with standard battery or for up to 13 hours with extended battery.
Sony Introduced Graphic Splash Edition C and FE VAIO Laptops
Sony today released fashionable “Graphic Splash Edition” VAIO notebooks. Limited to only 1350 these new designs will be available in both the VAIO C and FE Series laptop lines.
“Now PC users can embrace the season and their individual style with these fashion-forward dye-sub graphic patterns created exclusively by the Sony Design Center. To further personalize these colorful notebooks free engraving is also available,” Sony says.
Sony to Preload LocationFree Player on Vaio Laptops
Sony Electronics today announced that its LocationFree (LF) Player software will be pre-installed on all of the summer line of VAIO laptops. The software will enable Sony VAIO notebook users to access content from their home entertainment devices virtually anywhere in the world, as long as they have either a LF-B10 or LF-B20 Base Station.
Sony VAIO UX Premium Micro PC Announced
Sony announced that VAIO UX Premium Micro PC, a flash drive version of its VAIO UX Micro PC, will become available this February.
UX Premium Micro PC comes with 32GB flash memory based drive. These drives, known as solid state discs/drives (SSD), provide faster speeds for booting up and accessing data, greater reliability and lower power consumption.
Sony Vaio G - the Lightest 12.1-Inch Notebook
Although it is not officially announced in the United States yet, this week introduced “world’s lightest 12.-inch notebook” Sony Vaio G is available for purchase directly from Japan via Dynamism.com. Featuring carbon fiber casing, the Vaio G weights 1.98lbs, but the optional integrated DVD drive will boost notebook’s weight to 2.17 lbs.
Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Offers Vary
People buying certain Windows Vista certified computers from October 26 2006 until March 26 2007 with Windows XP preinstalled are qualified to get a voucher for a free or discounted upgrade to Windows Vista when the new operating system become available. Details of the Windows XP to Windows Vista upgrade, officially called Express Upgrade to Windows Vista, vary depending on PC manufacturers and retailers.
Sony Recalled Additional 250.000 Vaio Batteries
Sony today announced the recall of the additional 250,000 Vaio laptop batteries worldwide, after the company recalled 90,000 Vaio battery units in the Asia Pacific.
In the United States, the affected Sony Vaio batteries were sold from December 2004 through October 2006. In the Vaio FE series, the recalled batteries were sold with Vaio VGN-FE550G and VGN-FE570G notebooks. In T series, Sony recalled battery units sold with VGN-T240P, VGN-T250, VGN-T250P, VGN-T260P, VGN-T270P, VGN-T340P, VGN-T350, VGN-T350P, VGN-T360P, VGN-T370P laptops. It is possible that some of the affected batteries were sold separately.
CPSC Announced 340,000 Battery Recall
A voluntary recall of 340,000 laptop batteries made by Sony was officially announced in the United States today. The latest-recalled lithium ion batteries containing Sony cells were used in Fujitsu’s, Gateway’s, Sony’s, and Toshiba’s notebook computers. These lithium ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published.
According to the CPSC’s press release, consumers should stop using the recalled batteries immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Sony Vaio VGN-C190P/H and Vaio VGN-C140G/B Pre-Order Enabled
Sony Vaio VGN-C190P/H and Vaio VGN-C140G/B notebooks, the first laptops in last month announced Vaio C series, are now available for pre-order trough SonyStyle.com USA website.
Sony Vaio C’s announcement press release was focused rather on product’s “Personal Style” with white, pink, green, black and gray color offerings for the casing, than its technical characteristics. The product pages of the Vaio VGN-C190P/H and Vaio VGN-C140G/B 13.3-inch widescreen Core 2 Duo-powered notebooks contain detailed specifications of these two models.
Sony Vaio Battery Recall Announced
Sony Japan has announced the Vaio laptop battery recall. The recalled batteries are sold in laptops or on their own in the Asia Pacific region. Sony today asked anyone who owns a VGP-BPS2B or VGP-BPS3A battery pack to return the unit to the company. There is no info about Vaio battery replacement program in the United States, but it is reported that other Sony subsidiaries have yet to announce recalls of their own.
