Toshiba Recalls 1,400 Sony-Made Laptop Batteries in the U.S.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a voluntary recall of around 1,400 Sony-made batteries used in Toshiba’s notebooks. The recalled lithium-ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
The affected laptops are select Toshiba Satellite A100, Satellite A105, and Tecra A7 models, which were sold in the United States from January 2006 through April 2006. According to CPSC, Toshiba has received three reports outside of the United States of notebook batteries overheating. No injuries have been reported.
Toshiba Recalls 5,100 Laptop Batteries Worldwide
Toshiba recalled today about 5,100 laptop batteries, sold with its Dynabook, Dynabook Satellite, Satellite, and Tecra notebooks in Japan, the U.S., Europe, Australia, and China.
According to Toshiba’s representative, there were three cases in which these batteries caught fire - two in Japan and one in Australia. However, there were no injuries.
Toshiba Reminds Users to Replace Recalled Batteries
Toshiba Corporation today unveiled that one of its notebook computers with a Sony battery pack recently caught fire, and announced the additional measures to encourage customer participation in the global Sony battery packs replacement program, which started last year.
“On May 24, 2007, a Toshiba portable computer with a Sony battery pack caught fire. Toshiba immediately asked Sony to investigate. The investigation confirmed that the cause of the fire was the battery pack, as in other incidents reported earlier,” the Company’s press release says.
Toshiba Tecra M8 13.3-Inch Notebook Series Launched
Toshiba today launched its Tecra M8 13.3-inch notebook, based on Intel “Santa Rosa” mobile platform.
Toshiba Tecra M8-S8011, the first model in M8 series, features Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor at 1.8GHz, GM965 chipset with integrated GMA X3100 graphics empowering widescreen 1280-by-800 display, an 1GB DDR2 memory (expandable to 4GB), an 120GB 5400rpm SATA hard drive, and the 1GB Intel Turbo Memory for improved system responsiveness. The M8-S8011 has a built-in DVD burner.
Toshiba’s AMD-Powered Notebooks Coming This Summer
Toshiba Corporation announced today it will put AMD processors in about 20 percent of the notebooks it sells in the United States and Europe. The laptop PC maker plans to use AMD chips in moderate-priced standard models for individual and corporate clients, Reuters reports.
The first AMD-powered notebooks from Toshiba will be released this summer reportedly.
Lapjacks - Toshiba Personalised Laptop Service Launched
Computer Systems Division of Toshiba Europe today announced its Lapjacks service, which enables owners of the Toshiba notebooks to design a customized cover for their laptop.
“The website (Lapjacks.com) allows customers to choose from thousands of high quality images, upload their own digital photographs or even create an original design and submit it for production. The designs are then printed onto a high quality adhesive vinyl cover that is engineered to fit the exact dimensions of the laptop”.
Toshiba Tecra M9 with Centrino Pro Unveiled
Toshiba has announced a Tecra M9 14.1-inch widescreen notebook computer based on new Intel “Santa Rosa” platform and designed for mobile professionals.
As same as Tecra A9, the M9 features Intel Centrino Pro technology, which consists of four primary components including the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Intel 965 Express chipset, Intel’s wireless N solution and Intel Active Management Technology.
Toshiba Tecra A9 Centrino Pro Notebook Announced
Toshiba has announced Tecra A9 business class 15.4-inch widescreen notebook computer, featuring a new Intel Centrino Pro technology, which is a part of just announced Intel’s “Santa Rosa” laptop platform.
The notebook maker explains that the Centrino Pro consists of four primary components including the latest Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, the Mobile Intel 965 chipset, Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965AGN supporting draft 802.11n wireless connectivity and Intel Active Management Technology (AMT 2.5).
Toshiba Tecra A8-EZ8511, A6-EZ6411 - Budget-Minded Laptops
Toshiba has announced the availability of Tecra A8-EZ8511 and Tecra A6-EZ6411 budget-minded business laptops priced at $749 and $1,199 respectively.
The 15.4-inch widescreen (1280×800) Toshiba Tecra A8-EZ8511 comes with Intel Celeron M 430 processor at 1.73GHz, 512MB of DDR2 533MHz SDRAM, a 60GB SATA hard drive spinning at 5400rpm and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 256MB of shared graphics memory. It is based on Intel 945GM Express Chipset and has Atheros Wireless LAN (802.11b/g), Gigabit Ethernet and a 56k modem. The affordable A8-EZ8511 features three USB ports, a PC Card slot, a SD Slot, IEEE-1394, a fingerprint reader and a docking connector. Currently there is no information at Toshiba’s website on laptop’s external monitor support.
Toshiba Tecra M6-EZ6612 Ultra-Portable Laptop Announced
Toshiba has introduced M6-EZ6612, the new thin and light mainstream-business notebook configuration in its Tecra M6 series. Weighing 4.1 pounds, Toshiba Tecra M6-EZ6612 provides 12.1-inch widescreen display with 1280×800 resolution, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5600 at 1.83GHz, 1GB of DDR2 553MHz system memory, 100GB SATA hard drive at 5400rpm and a double layer DVD burner.
The Tecra M6-EZ6612 is built on Intel 945GM Express Chipset providing Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with 8MB to 256MB of shared memory, Intel PRO/Wireless 802.11a/b/g, Gigabit Ethernet, 56k modem and a Bluetooth.
Toshiba Tecra M5-S4333 - Company’s New Flagship Business Laptop
Toshiba has announced the Tecra M5-S433, the company’s new flagship business notebook. Toshiba Tecra M5-S4333 has a 14.1-inch screen with 1400×1050 native resolution. The new Windows Vista Business notebook is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 at 2.00GHz and NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M graphics card with 128MB DDR discrete graphics memory plus up to128MB of shared memory using NVIDIA TurboCache technology.
The Tecra M5-S4333 has 2GB of DDR2 667MHz memory and 120GB 5400rpm SATA hard drive. Its swappable Slim SelectBay provides users the possibility to switch out the standard DVD-SuperMulti writer for a second hard drive to expand data storage.
CPSC Announced 340,000 Battery Recall
A voluntary recall of 340,000 laptop batteries made by Sony was officially announced in the United States today. The latest-recalled lithium ion batteries containing Sony cells were used in Fujitsu’s, Gateway’s, Sony’s, and Toshiba’s notebook computers. These lithium ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published.
According to the CPSC’s press release, consumers should stop using the recalled batteries immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Toshiba Laptops Not Affected by Sony Battery Problem
Toshiba laptops are not affected by Sony battery issue, Toshiba published on its ToshibaDirect.com site. According to information published after investigation with Sony, Toshiba have found no evidence that the laptop battery problem reported by Dell and Apple in their latest recalls applies to its notebook PCs.
Toshiba Tecra M7 Widescreen Tablet PC Unveiled
Toshiba unveiled Tecra M7, the company’s first widescreen Tablet PC. “Toshiba Tecra M7 is the world’s first Tablet PC to incorporate a 14.1-inch diagonal widescreen WXGA+ (1440 x 900) display with Tablet PC support. This large display with increased resolution provides users with a greater amount of screen real estate to maximize the digital ink capabilities”, says Toshiba Digital Products Division in press release.

Toshiba launched new Tecra A8 laptop computer featuring Intel dual core processor and a 15.4-inch screen. “The Toshiba Tecra A8 is the result of Toshiba’s quality assurance and design engineers collaborating to develop a mobile computing solution that dramatically increases reliability, quality and productivity expectations for a notebook computer”, says Toshiba’s Digital Products Division in press release.
