Toshiba Reveals Atom-Based UMPC Prototype

ToshibaToshiba has revealed a prototype of an ultra-mobile PC with a 5.6-inch touchscreen display, Intel’s Atom processor, a 64GB solid state drive, and GPS receiver.

PC Authority reports the keyboard in the device is ditched in favour of a touchscreen keyboard.

StreamMyGame Enables Crysis, Quake 4 on Netbooks, UMPCs

StreamMyGameStreamMyGame.com announced recently that their streaming software now enables users to play intense 3D games on netbooks and ultra-mobile PCs, such as the Asus Eee PC, HP 2133, or Samsung Q1 Ultra.

Community website’s staff explains that the PC game’s video and audio are captured in real-time and sent over the Internet to a remote device, while the keyboard input at the remote device is sent back to the PC and used to control the game.

VIA Introduces VX800 Series Chipsets for Laptops, UMPCs

VIA VX800 SeriesVIA Technologies, Inc has announced the new VIA VX800 Series laptop and ultra mobile PC chipsets, “featuring the latest video, graphics and connectivity performance in a single chip measuring just 33x33mm”.

“The VIA VX800 Series comprises two primary digital media IGP chipsets, the VIA VX800 for ultra thin and light notebooks, mini PCs and embedded devices, and the ultra low voltage VIA VX800U for the fast-expanding ultra mobile market, including the rapidly-emerging mini-note, UMPC and UMD markets,” the press release says.

Intel Atom Processor Benchmarked

Intel AtomGerman website ComputerBase has published the first benchmark of the upcoming Intel Atom processor, codenamed “Silverthorne”, which is designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices and Ultra-Mobile PCs.

According to the Super PI test result, the Atom at 1.6GHz is a little bit faster than the old Intel Pentium III-M “Tualatin” at 1.13GHz, but slower than the laptop-use Intel Celeron M “Dothan-512″ at 900MHz, utilized in the Asus Eee PC. However, Super PI is a single-threaded application, while the “Silverthorne” CPUs incorporate HyperThreading technology for improved performance of multi-threaded software.

Intel Atom, Centrino AtomIntel announced yesterday that its upcoming processors codenamed “Silverthorn” and “Diamondville”, designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and Ultra-Moble PCs, are officially named the Intel Atom. The corresponding “Menlow” MID/UMPC platform is called the Intel Centrino Atom, the chip maker published.

Samsung SPH-P9200 Details Revealed

Samsung SPH-P9200The leaked manual for the Samsung SPH-P9200 revealed the full specifications of this ultra-mobile PC device. The UMPC features a 5-inch 800×480 touch-sensitive display, a folding keyboard, a Via C7-M processor at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM, and a 30GB hard drive, and supports Wifi, Wibro and HSDPA networks, according to the manual.

The 1.43-pound SPH-P9200, also known as the Deluxe MIT SPH-P9200, provides 2-2.5 hours of run time with a standard battery, and up to 5 hours with an extended battery unit.

The new platform is scheduled for launch in the first half 2008 and is comprised of the “Silverthorne” 45-nanometer processor and the “Poulsbo” chipset, which is based on a single-chip design.

Fujitsu LifeBook U810 UMPC Available

Fujitsu LifeBook U810Fujitsu LifeBook U810, the company’s first ultra-mobile PC for the US makret, is now available for purchase. The “World’s smallest tablet convertible” U810 is based on the Intel’s Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, and has a 5.6-inch touch-sensitive display, a QWERTY keyboard, a weight of just 1.56 pounds, and a claimed battery life of up to 5.5 hours with a standard 4-cell battery.

The LifeBook U810 is equipped with the Intel A110 Ultra Low Power processor at 800MHz and uses a 400MHz front side bus. This convertible laptop-like UMPC has 1GB of DDR2 system memory, and a 40GB 1.8-inch hard drive at 4200rpm. Its 5.6″ display with finger and pen input capability provides 1024-by-600 pixel resolution and is managed by the integrated graphics, which is a part of the U810′s Intel 945GU chipset.

OQO Model 02VIA Technologies announced yesterday that the OQO Model 02 ultra-mobile PC is the first computer with the chip maker’s new 1.6GHz VIA C7-M ULV processor.

In addition to a faster processor, the refreshed OQO Model 02 UMPC lineup now also includes configurations with the support for EVDO Rev. A broadband wireless networks, as well as with a 32GB solid state drive and a traditional 120GB HDD.

HTC Shift Specifications Revealed

HTC ShiftThe HTC Corp.’s upcoming HTC Shift ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) features the Intel “Stealey” 800Mhz processor and the Qualcomm MSM 7200 chipset. This UMPC weighs 1.76 pounds and provides up to 2 hours of battery life, according to the revealed product specifications.

The first reports about the HTC Shift said this device, with a 7-inch screen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, has a 30GB hard drive. However, the new specifications list 40GB or 60GB HDD options and a 1GB system memory, while the Shift’s touch screen display is claimed to have 800×480 resolution. The graphics solution inside the HTC’s new UMPC supports Windows Vista’s Aero feature with 3D flip accordingly.

Currently, the pricing and availability dates of the Everex CE260 are not known. It is expected to be affordable because VIA NanoBook UMD (Ultra-Mobile Device), scheduled for release during the second half of 2007, is “targeted at aggressive consumer price points”.

VIA Unveils NanoBook Ultra Mobile Device

VIA NanoBook UMDVIA Technologies today unveils the new VIA NanoBook UMD (Ultra Mobile Device) Reference Design at VTF2007 in Taipei.

The NanoBook has clamshell form factor, a 7-inch 840-by-480 pixel screen with touch panel, a full keyboard, and a claimed battery life of up to 5 hours, and weighs less than approximately 1.87lbs. It is based on VIA VX700 chipset featuring the VIA UniChrome Pro II IGP integrated graphics and powered by the ultra low voltage 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor. This ultra mobile device includes up to 1GB DDR2 memory, a minimum 30GB hard drive, 802.11g WiFi, Bluetooth and Ethernet support, as well as a 4-in-1 card reader, a DVI port and two USB 2.0 ports.

Raon Everun “Smallest and Lightest” UMPC Announced

Raon EverunKorean company Raon Digital has announced its new ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) called Everun, which is claimed to be “the world’s smallest and lightest” device in its class.

Starting at approximately 1lbs (460g), Raon Everun has QWERTY keypad, an auto rotating 4.8 inch touchscreen display with 800×480 resolution, and “ultra power saving” AMD Geode processor. The lightest model – Everun Lite S6 – incorporates 6GB solid state drive, instead of 1.8-inch hard drive with 30GB or 60GB capacity found in Everun Lite H3 and Everun STD H6 models respectively. There is also the Everun STD SH6, which features both 6GB SSD and 60GB HDD. Each of these UMPCs has 512MB of system memory.

Fujitsu FMV-U8240 – The Company’s First UMPC

Fujitsu  FMV-U8240 UMPCFujitsu today announced the addition of the U Series of ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs) to its FMV-LIFEBOOK line of laptops. The introduced FMV-U8240 model for the Japanese market is the Company’s first UMPC device.

“Intended for business users, the U Series is the world’s smallest tablet-convertible UMPC, weighing only 580g and with a thickness of only 26.5mm,” Fujitsu says, adding that this mobile computer has a battery life of up to eight hours.
