VIA Introduces VX800 Series Chipsets for Laptops, UMPCs

VIA VX800 SeriesVIA Technologies, Inc has announced the new VIA VX800 Series laptop and ultra mobile PC chipsets, “featuring the latest video, graphics and connectivity performance in a single chip measuring just 33×33mm”.

“The VIA VX800 Series comprises two primary digital media IGP chipsets, the VIA VX800 for ultra thin and light notebooks, mini PCs and embedded devices, and the ultra low voltage VIA VX800U for the fast-expanding ultra mobile market, including the rapidly-emerging mini-note, UMPC and UMD markets,” the press release says.

Asustek Displays Asus R50, R70 UMPCs at CeBIT

Asus R50 (R70 looks similar)Asustek’s upcoming Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs) - the Asus R50 and Asus R70 - are showcased at the 2008 CeBIT Show, which ends today.

The R50 and R70, with 5.6-inch and 7-inch displays respectively, are most likely based on the recently introduced Intel Centrino Atom platform, codenamed “Menlow”, with the Atom “Silverthorne” processor and the “Poulsbo” chipset. The both devices run Windows Vista operating system.

Intel Atom Processor Benchmarked

Intel AtomGerman website ComputerBase has published the first benchmark of the upcoming Intel Atom processor, codenamed “Silverthorne”, which is designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices and Ultra-Mobile PCs.

According to the Super PI test result, the Atom at 1.6GHz is a little bit faster than the old Intel Pentium III-M “Tualatin” at 1.13GHz, but slower than the laptop-use Intel Celeron M “Dothan-512″ at 900MHz, utilized in the Asus Eee PC. However, Super PI is a single-threaded application, while the “Silverthorne” CPUs incorporate HyperThreading technology for improved performance of multi-threaded software.

Intel Atom, Centrino AtomIntel announced yesterday that its upcoming processors codenamed “Silverthorn” and “Diamondville”, designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and Ultra-Moble PCs, are officially named the Intel Atom. The corresponding “Menlow” MID/UMPC platform is called the Intel Centrino Atom, the chip maker published.

Everex CloudBook CE1200VAfter a few delays, the Everex CloudBook CE1200V ultra-mobile PC is now available for purchase through Wal-Mart.

The CloudBook is the first computer for the U.S. market based on the VIA NanoBook low-cost device with a 7-inch display and a laptop-like design.

HP Compaq 2133Hewlett-Packard is going to release the HP Compaq 2133, the company’s first ultra-mobile PC (UMPC), Engadget reports.

“The HP Compaq 2133 “lifestyle accessory” features a big, scratch resistant 8.9-inch 1366 x 766 (WXGA) display, ExpressCard/54 slot, Wireless LAN, nearly full-sized QWERTY (95% of full), integrated webcam, and optional SSD in a 2.5-pound anodized aluminum sex pot running Vista or Linux,” the report says.

Everex CloudBook Delayed to February 15th

Everex CloudBook CE1200VEverex has delayed the launch of its CloudBook CE1200V ultra-mobile PC. This small and affordable system, which was scheduled for release on January 25th, will be available at Walmart.com and ZaReason.com beginning February 15th, according to the updated product page on Everex.com.

The CloudBook features a 7-inch display and a laptop-like design. It is the first device for the U.S. market based on the VIA NanoBook, incorporating the C7-M ULV processor. The CloudBook weighs two pounds and has a claimed battery life of five hours. It runs gOS V2 Rocket operating system.

Lenovo Showcases Its MID Device

Lenovo MIDAlthough Lenovo was expected to introduce its first Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) at the ongoing 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company showcased the Mobile Internet Device (MID) instead.

The Lenovo MID, which is one of the first of these devices, is based on the Intel “Menlow” platform and features a 4.8-inch touchscreen display, a phone dialing pad apparently, a built-in camera, and a Linux-based user interface.

Samsung Q1 Ultra Image (not Premium)Samsung today unveiled the Q1 Ultra Premium UMPC, which advances the Q1 Ultra line by delivering “enhanced performance, extended battery life, and superior text entry”.

The Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium sub 2-pound ultra-mobile PC features the Intel Core Solo U1500 ULV processor at 1.33GHz, 1GB of DDR2 system memory, and an 80GB hard drive. This UMPC has a 7-inch touchscreen 1024-by-600 display and the new Version 1.5 of its split-QWERTY keypad, which now provides larger, improved keycaps for easier text entry. Samsung says the Q1 Ultra Premium has up to 7.5 hours of run time with a standard 6-cell battery.

Lenovo Enters UMPC Market

LenovoLenovo is going to enter the ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) market, the company’s vice president of global consumer marketing Craig Merrigan announced this week.

The first Lenovo UMPC is based on Intel’s “Menlow” platform and will be on display at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which begins on Monday.

WiBrain B1 UMPC Coming to U.S. This Month

WiBrain B1The WiBrain B1, an ultra mobile PC (UMPC) designed for the Korean market, will available in the United States starting mid- to late December through Dynamism.com, Crave CNet reports.

The 1.15-pound WiBrain B1 is based on the VIA C7M ULV processor at 1.2 GHz and the VX700 graphics chip. It is advertised as one of the first devices utilizing a 1024-by-600 pixel 4.8-inch WSVGA touch-screen display. According to Dynamism, the UMPC has a battery life of about three hours in real world use.

Samsung SPH-P9200The leaked manual for the Samsung SPH-P9200 revealed the full specifications of this ultra-mobile PC device. The UMPC features a 5-inch 800×480 touch-sensitive display, a folding keyboard, a Via C7-M processor at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM, and a 30GB hard drive, and supports Wifi, Wibro and HSDPA networks, according to the manual.

The 1.43-pound SPH-P9200, also known as the Deluxe MIT SPH-P9200, provides 2-2.5 hours of run time with a standard battery, and up to 5 hours with an extended battery unit.

Fujitsu LifeBook U810Fujitsu LifeBook U810, the company’s first ultra-mobile PC for the US makret, is now available for purchase. The “World’s smallest tablet convertible” U810 is based on the Intel’s Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, and has a 5.6-inch touch-sensitive display, a QWERTY keyboard, a weight of just 1.56 pounds, and a claimed battery life of up to 5.5 hours with a standard 4-cell battery.

The LifeBook U810 is equipped with the Intel A110 Ultra Low Power processor at 800MHz and uses a 400MHz front side bus. This convertible laptop-like UMPC has 1GB of DDR2 system memory, and a 40GB 1.8-inch hard drive at 4200rpm. Its 5.6” display with finger and pen input capability provides 1024-by-600 pixel resolution and is managed by the integrated graphics, which is a part of the U810’s Intel 945GU chipset.

OQO Model 02VIA Technologies announced yesterday that the OQO Model 02 ultra-mobile PC is the first computer with the chip maker’s new 1.6GHz VIA C7-M ULV processor.

In addition to a faster processor, the refreshed OQO Model 02 UMPC lineup now also includes configurations with the support for EVDO Rev. A broadband wireless networks, as well as with a 32GB solid state drive and a traditional 120GB HDD.
