Ubuntu 11.10 vs Windows 7 Starter on Netbook – Benchmarks

Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot”, the latest version of the most popular Linux distribution among laptop PC users, is now available.

There are many improvements in the new version, including changes in Ubuntu’s Unity interface and various bug fixes. The 11.10 includes new themes and login screen, new features such as Deja Dup backup application, ability to sync installed apps across multiple computers via OneConf feature, and newer kernel version. The default browser is Firefox 7. When it comes to email, Mozilla Thunderbird replaces Evolution client.

Intel Launches AppUp Center Offering Apps for Netbooks

Intel AppUp CenterIntel Corp. has introduced availability of the Intel AppUp center, an application store for netbooks.

“The Intel AppUp center includes both free and paid apps for entertainment, social networking, gaming and productivity, optimized for a netbook’s mobility and screen size. To encourage consumers to try new applications, Intel AppUp provides “try before you buy” solutions, encouraging consumers to purchase apps they otherwise might not have,” the press relase says.

Windows 7 Officially Launched

Windows 7 EditionsMicrosoft announced today the worldwide availability of Windows 7, its new operating system for PCs.

Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate Edition upgrade licenses are priced at $119.99, $199.99, and $219.99, respectively. There’s also Windows 7 Starter Edition, which can be found on new netbooks. The first Windows 7 laptops mostly come with Home Premium Edition.

Windows 7 Available for Pre-Order

Windows 7 ProMicrosoft’s Windows 7 is available for pre-order at various retailers who offer instant savings for early orders of the upcoming operating system.

Windows 7, scheduled for release on October 22, is available for pre-order in three editions: Home Premium ($120 $50), Professional ($200 $100), and Ultimate ($220). The discounts are valid while supplies last. The prices are for Upgrade versions, aimed at users that already own a computer with Windows Vista OS. “Full” Home Premium, Pro, and Ultimate are priced at $200, $300, and $320.
