CompAmerica today introduced its preconfigured Back to School laptop, called the Pantera (Academic Edition). With an price of $1,379, academic Pantera features a 2 GHz Dual Core Centrino Technology CPU, wifi 802.11a/b/g, gigabit ethernet, 8x DVD Burner with dual layer capability, and a 14″ Glass View Screen. The laptop includes Open Source Office, AntiVirus, Firewall, Spyware remover, and Windows XP Home.
While CompAmerica’s laptops are customizable, the new Pantera is said to be the first departure from that philosophy: “the right product for every student, with only two options… more memory or a larger 15.4-inch screen.”
The CompAmerica Pantera for the students heading back to school weights 5.5 lbs, and looks like it is built on one of the barebone models made by Taiwan-based Clevo.
