Dell Inc. has unveiled its new 17-inch Dell Inspiron 1720 and Inspiron 1721 laptops, based on Intel’s and AMD’s chipsets and processors respectively.
The Inspiron 1720 is built on Intel “Santa Rosa” notebook platform and is offered with Core 2 Duo T5250, T5450, T7100, T7300, and T7500 CPUs. These processors have clock speeds ranging from 1.5GHz to 2.2GHz and 800MHz FSB. The 1720 model with GM965 chipset features integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, while the same notebook based on Intel PM965 chipset provides a choice of dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 128MB or NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256MB video card.
Dell Inspiron 1721 is based on AMD ATI M690T chipset, Turion 64 X2 dual core processors with speeds from 1.8GHz to 2.2GHz, and ATI Mobility Radeon X1270 integrated graphics.
The 17-inch widescreen display found on 1720 and 1721 notebooks provides 1440×900 or optional 1920×1200 screen resolution. These notebooks support up to two SATA hard drives simultaneously (up to 2×250GB offered) and initially come with up to 4GB of system memory, while the 8GB memory and hybrid hard drive options will be available later reportedly. Additionally, the Inspiron 1721 supports RAID 0 and RAID 1. Along with Combo drive and DVD burner choices in both models, Dell Inspiron 1520 has a Blu-Ray optical drive option, when configured with a dedicated graphics card.
Dell Inspiron 1720 and 1721 provide wireless LAN, including the option for the latest 802.11n draft Wi-Fi standard, as well as built in Ethernet LAN, a 56k modem, Bluetooth, and an optional EVDO and HSDPA wireless broadband connections.
Each of these laptops has five USB ports, Firewire, a 8-in-1 media card reader, an optional Infrared, S-Video out, VGA out, an ExpressCard slot, and an optional 2 megapixel web camera.
The notebooks weigh starting at 7.62 lbs with 6-cell batteries and feature refreshed chassis design in eight colors, as well as numeric keypads.
The basic Dell Inspiron 1720 configuration costs $1,049, while the Inspiron 1721 starts at $919. These systems ship with Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium.
