Dell Inc. has confirmed that it will offer notebook and desktop computers with factory installed Linux operating system, after the thousands of Dell’s IdeaStorm blog visitors voted for that idea.
“Dell has heard you and we will expand our Linux support beyond our existing servers and Precision workstation line. Our first step in this effort is offering Linux pre-installed on select desktop and notebook systems. We will provide an update in the coming weeks that includes detailed information on which systems we will offer, our testing and certification efforts, and the Linux distribution(s) that will be available. The countdown begins today,” the company responded.
Currently it is not known if and how much the Dell’s PCs with preloaded Linux OS will be cheaper than their Windows Vista and Windows XP counterparts. Contrary to Vista, the most of Linux distributions are free of charge and come with a variety of free software.
