Dell will launch a wide-range of laptops powered by AMD processors in the fourth quarter, targeting all market segments from low end to high end and offering models that use AMD Sempron and Athlon 64 processors, as well as Turion 64 x2 CPUs, Digitimes reports according to sources at Taiwan-based laptop makers.
The first AMD-based models, which will likely be launched in late October or early November, will be 15.4-inch consumer oriented laptops, the sources said. Then, Dell will introduce 17-inch screen AMD-based laptops at the end of the year, the sources added.
The sources also remarked that competition between Dell and HP, which is the biggest client for AMD notebook CPUs, in the US market is expected to be fiercer ever after Dell’s launch of AMD-based notebooks.
Update: According to a news-story by ZDnet Asia, Dell has confirmed that it will release AMD based notebooks later this year.
“This is not a big deal. In order to remain competitive, we have to make sure that we have a wide enough variety of products to meet the market demand,” an executive for Dell, who declined to be named, said.
