Devon IT SafebookDevon IT introduced the Safebook, its first laptop thin client. The Safebook uses Windows XP Embedded operating system and relies on applications and data being provided by a server. It has no hard drive so Devon IT claims the laptop is immune to standard computer viruses and spyware, because there’s no disk on which malicious software can be stored. Also, sensitive data can’t be lost or stolen along with laptop, since the data is stored on the server.

The Safebook communicates with server through wireless, Ethernet, or optional 3G Broadband connections, Devon IT says. Remote wired or wireless access to server-based applications and data is secured through Citrix ICA or Microsoft RDP protocols.

The 12-inch screen Safebook is powered by Via C7 M processor clocked at 1.5 GHz. It supports up to 1 GB DDR RAM and it has 512 MB flash memory. Regarding I/O ports and slots, it has 10/100 Ethernet, 3 USB ports, audio line out and mic in, VGA out and PCMCIA Type II slot.

The Safebook’s battery lasts for over 6 hours and it weights 4 lbs with 5-cell battery, according to the Devon.

The Safebook mobile thin client’s price starts at $799.
