Dual-Core Intel Atom For Netbooks Coming 2Q; 1.5GHz Speed Rumored

Intel AtomA dual-core version of Intel Atom processor for netbooks will be launched in the second quarter this year, Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini said during the latest earnings call.

Otellini didn’t provide details of the new CPU, but website Fudzilla reports the dual-core chip will be clocked at 1.5GHz and produced using 45-nanometer technology. Its thermal design power is 8.5W, whereas the currently available N450 and N470 single core chips consume 5.5W and 6.5W.

Intel is also expected to release the 1.83GHz single-core Atom N475 CPU this year, according to Fudzilla. It has the same clock speed and TDP as the N470, but it will support DDR3 memory insted of N470′s DDR2.

UPDATE: According to DigiTimes, the dual-core Atom will be named N500.

UPDATE2: Fudzilla reports that the 1.5GHz dual-core Atom is the N550.
