Fujitsu MHW2160BJFujitsu today announced the development of the new MHW2 BJ series of world’s first 7,200rpm 2.5-inch hard disk drives with a serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s - also known as SATA2 - interface. Featuring the MHW2160BJ with “the world’s highest storage capacity of 160GB for a 2.5-inch HDD with 7,200rpm rotational speed”, the new series is targeted primarily at high-performance notebook computers.

“In addition to achieving the world’s leading storage capacity, MHW2160BJ is capable of data transmission speeds at up to 300 MB/s, the fastest rate in the industry. The series also features best-in-class acoustic noise level of 2.5 bels at idle, and low-power consumption, operating at 2.3 watts or less when reading or writing data,” Fujitsu’s press release says.

The announced new HDD series will be available on global basis at the end of May, 2007.

The SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface is an expanded version of the original SATA 1.5 Gb/s interface and, due to the encoding scheme, equivalent to an actual data transfer speed of 2.4 Gb/s, Fujitsu explained.

Along with Fujitsu, Hitachi also announced the high-capacity laptop hard drive at 7,200rpm. It is 200GB 2.5-inch TravelStar, claimed to be released this year.
