Gateway E-100MGateway will be among the first OEMs to offer Intel’s Core 2 Duo (Merom) ultra-low voltage processor in an ultra-portable laptop. Starting May 3, Gateway customers will be able to order an E-100M business sub-notebook with Intel’s new U7600 ULV CPU, eWeek reports.

It is expected that the inclusion of the recently announced ultra-low voltage Merom processor will add $75 to the current E-100M’s price.

“Currently, Gateway’s E-100M uses a 1.2GHz Intel Core Solo (U1400 ULV) processor with a 533MHz FSB and 2MB of L2 cache for a base price of $1,299. The remainder of the E-100M’s configurations will remain the same. The laptop includes 512MB of DDR2 memory; a 40GB SATA hard drive; support for 802.11a/b/g wireless networks; and a 12.1-inch display. The E-100M also uses Microsoft’s Windows XP Professional Edition,” eWeek says.

Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 is also clocked at 1.2GHz and has a 533MHz FSB and 2MB of L2 cache, but it additionally provides dual core computing and support for 64-bit operating systems and software. The downside of U7600 ULV processor, when compared to Intel Core Solo U1400 ULV, is its TDP (thermal design power) of 10 watts, which is almost doubled U1400’s TDP of 5.5 watts.
