While everyone was fawning over Apple and its shiny-screened MacBooks, Gateway slipped the word out about its NS100X Ultra Portable laptop. Since it’s less than an inch thick, Gateway decided to call it ultrathin, and it’s fairly light at 3.15 pounds with a 12.1-inch widescreen display at 1280×800 pixels.

But wait. Gateway inexplicably equipped the NS100X with the limp-wristed Intel Core Solo processor at 1.06GHz or an optional 1.2GHz. Perhaps that weak chip spec was meant to keep the cost low, where pricing starts at $1399. Still hard to believe, especially considering that you can get a MacBook with a 1.83GHz Core Duo chip and a gig of RAM for $1199.
