HP Compaq 6520s, 6720s Announced

Hewlett-Packard has announced the HP Compaq 6520s and the HP Compaq 6720s affordable business-class notebooks, both featuring Intel’s chipsets and processors and the new industrial design.

The 6520s and the 6720s are based on the Intel GM965 (800MHz front side bus) or the new GL960 (533MHz FSB) chipset, and Intel Core 2 Duo or Celeron M processor, depending on configuration. We assume notebook models with Core 2 Duo CPUs use the GM965, while the GL960 chipset is most likely paired with a Celeron processor. These chipsets incorporate the integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100.

The HP Compaq 6520s and the 6720s, basically the same laptops with different screen sizes, have 14.1-inch and 15.4-inch widescreen displays respectively, both providing 1280×800 resolution. Customers are enabled to choose between a matt and a glossy display finish.

These new laptops support up to 4GB of system memory and feature a SATA hard drive at 5400rpm, with capacity of up to 160GB. Regarding optical drives, there are options of a DVD burner with LightScribe technology and a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive.

The 6520s and the 6720s support 802.11a/b/g and optionally the 802.11 draft-n wireless standard, and provide Ethernet LAN and 56K modem connectivity, as well as a Bluetooth option. In each of the 6520s/6720s notebooks there are ExpressCard and Secure Digital slots, three USB ports, and a VGA output. There is no fingerprint reader in any of these notebooks.

According to product specifications, the announced laptops have a mono speaker, instead of commonly used stereo speakers. However, the stereo High Definition Audio sound is provided through the laptops’ headphone output.

The HP Compaq 6520s and the HP Compaq 6720s start at 5lbs and 5.5lbs respectively with standard 6-cell batteries. These are the first notebooks in HP Compaq business line with the refreshed design featuring a silver chassis color, a drop-hinge display panel, and a scooped-out keyboard.

The specifications say operating system options include the Windows Vista Business, Vista Home Basic and FreeDOS, as well as the RedFlag, the Chinese Linux distribution.

The 6520s has not been made available for purchase yet, while the 6720s can be ordered immediately through the Hewlett-Packard’s Small & Medium Business website, with prices starting at $599.
