Intel plans to unveil a new processor for the One Laptop Per Child’s (OLPC) XO notebook and other ultra-low cost laptops at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai next April, Info World reports.
“No current Intel microprocessors fit the requirements of the OLPC, which uses a processor from Advanced Micro Devices, so Intel will design a new architecture specifically for the ultra-low cost laptop categoryâ€, said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the mobile platforms group at Intel.
The OLPC XO laptop currently runs on AMD’s 433MHz Geode LX-700, an affordable and power-saving chip. Intel executives initially talked about using existing mobile processors for the OLPC’s notebook, such as modified versions of the Celeron M or upcoming Silverthorne processor, but the XO’s small form factor, low price, and low power consumption require a new architecture, according to Eden.
