Intel is going to release the “Shelton’08″ low-cost notebook platform in the third quarter 2008, according to DigiTimes’ sources at PC makers.
The “Shelton’08″ features the Intel “Diamondville” single core processor at 1.6GHz, a 533MHz front-side bus, the 945GSE chipset with integrated DirecX 9 graphics chip, single channel DDR2 memory support, an 802.11g Wi-Fi module, and a USB/PATA solid state drive. The platform is claimed to have low power consumption, enabling battery life of between 3-4 hours.
DigiTimes reports the next-generation budget laptops will have 7- or 8-inch displays.
“Currently, Micro-Star International (MSI) and Gigabyte Technology have already started product development, while Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Acer are expected to follow at a later time”, the report says.
The first Shelton’08-based laptops will be priced between US$300-$500.
