Lenovo Introduces Enhanced Multitouch Technology

Lenovo Enhanced MultitouchLenovo introduced today Enhanced Multitouch display technology, initially available on the ThinkPad X200 Tablet PC and the ThinkPad T400s laptop.

Enhanced Multitouch supports one- and two-finger gestures, as well as digitizer pen input. For instance, users can zoom in by pinching fingers together, and zoom out by moving fingers apart; pan vertically or horizontally by moving two fingers up and down or left and right; rotate an image by moving one finger around another; right-click by holding one finger on an object and tapping another finger; or flick using quick linear pen or touch movements.

Furthermore, on the multitouch-enabled T400s users can utilize four fingers to manipulate objects in engineering and design applications.

The new technology also provides improved capacitive touch sensitivity and input accuracy, pen proximity detection technology, and improved palm recognition.

Besides Enhanced Multitouch, Lenovo announced SimpleTap touchscreen software for the upcoming Windows 7 OS. The software is designed to provide easier access to applications and laptop settings and will be available for download after Windows 7 release.

In addition, the company introduced an outdoors-optimized display option, called SuperBright Outdoor, for the X200 Tablet. Lenovo, however, notes that SuperBright Outdoor does support pen input, but does not support finger touch.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X200 Tablet with Multi-Touch Screen starts at $1,654, whereas the multi-touch option on the ThinkPad T400s is priced at $400. When chosen instead of X200 Tablet’s basic display, SuperBright Outdoor screen adds $250 to the overall price of the purchased system.
