Although Lenovo was expected to introduce its first Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) at the ongoing 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company showcased the Mobile Internet Device (MID) instead.
The Lenovo MID, which is one of the first of these devices, is based on the Intel “Menlow” platform and features a 4.8-inch touchscreen display, a phone dialing pad apparently, a built-in camera, and a Linux-based user interface.
The “Menlow” is designed for use in UMPCs and MIDs and consists of a new 45-nanometer processor codenamed “Silverthorne” and the “Poulsbo” chipset. This platform is scheduled for release in the first half of 2008.
MIDs generally have smaller displays than UMPC devices. Another difference is that MIDs run Linux OS instead of Microsoft Windows, commonly preloaded onto UMPCs.
