The non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) announced today commercial availability of its XO laptop, initially aimed to help education of children in developing countries.
“Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptops - one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home”, Founder and Chairman of One Laptop Per Child Nicholas Negroponte said in a statement.
According to Assocated Press, “the catch is that Give 1 Get 1 Program will run only from November 12 to November 26″ and that “just the first 25,000 buyers will be promised delivery of their XOs by the Christmas season”.
The XO notebook features a 7.5-inch display, the AMD Geode LX-700 processor at 433MHz, 256 MB of system memory, and 1GB of data storage capacity. It has a water and dust resistant chassis and runs Linux-based user interface called Sugar.
