The United States based R Cubed Technologies has signed agreement with Novell to distribute PCs pre-loaded with Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED 10) operating system. “Pre-loading SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 on our PCs and laptops is a natural move, as the market recognizes the advantages of Linux on the desktop and businesses decide to migrate to those advantages,” said Nathan Rockhold, president of R Cubed Technologies.
R Cubed currently offers six notebook models with one of the most popular Linux desktop distributions preinstalled for free, such as Open Suse, Fedora or Ubuntu. The preinstalled Linux operating systems ship with a lot of free desktop applications, including the free OpenOffice with word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, database and drawing applications, the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, free Evolution groupware client, Gaim instant messenger and GIMP photo application as same as with various multimedia applications.
For additional $50 you can get SLED 10 with one year subscription, which is a guarantee that Novell will keep your PC fully patched and updated during the period of the subscription.
There is also an option to have up to three operating systems preinstalled on one laptop, including Windows XP Home, Pro or Media Center, along with Linux operating systems.
The R Cubed Linux laptops are based on Asus barebone (whitebox) notebook systems made for use with Intel’s processors. The 12.1, 13.3, 14.1, 15.4 and 17-inch screen Linux notebooks are available with starting prices ranging from $800 to $1160.
The main disadvantage of the purchase of these laptops with Linux OS is the lack of driver support for the built-in 56k modems and built-in web cameras mounted on the notebook’s screen panel.
R Cubed also offers Linux based desktop PCs.
Novell has signed the same SLED 10 agreement with three European PC manufacturers - ETegro Technologies, MAXDATA and Transtec.
