Samsung Unveils Intel Celeron-Based Chromebook

We haven’t seen an announcement of an Intel-Celeron based laptop since mid-2008, but at 2012 CES, Samsung unveiled a Series 5 Chromebook with Intel’s bugdet processor.

The unnamed Celeron CPU in Samsung’s 2nd gen Chrome OS-based mini laptop replaces the Atom N570 chip used in the previous model. Celerons are traditionally more power hungry than Atom chips, but Netbook News reports that Samsung said the battery life will be comparable to the original Atom-powered Chromebook and that computing performance will be significantly increased.

Another change on the new Series 5 Chromebook is its design, which has a new matte lid finish instead of the old glossy one.

The laptop retained its old 12.1-inch screen size and 16GB of internal storage, as well as Wi-Fi and optional 3G connectivity.

It’s scheduled for release in Q2 with a price of $399 for the Wi-Fi model and $449 for the 3G version.
