Sony VAIO VGN-FE790 CTO, the first customizable notebook in FE series which can be configured with new Intel Core 2 Duo processor, is now available at SonyStyle.com. The VGN-FE790 CTO (configure-to-order) comes with one of five Core 2 Duo Mobile (Merom) processors, by your choice.
The 15.4-inch widescreen Vaio VGN-FE790 features Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 or optional NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 128MB graphics card for additional $75. But, if you purchase the laptop with NVIDIA’s card you must also add $50 for the screen with XBRITE-HiColor Technology and MOTION EYE Camera, since the GeForce Go 7600 is selectable only with that upgraded screen. The laptop is based on Intel 945GM chipset (when you select Intel’s integrated graphics) and Intel 945PM Chipset (when you select NVIDIAs dedicated graphics). We suppose that there will be also VGN-FE790 featuring GeForce Go 7400 with TurboCache supporting 256MB available, since this option is listed in notebook’s specifications. But, the specs sheet says: “Gray model only available with Go 7400 Graphics option”.
Sony VAIO VGN-FE790 CTO offers SATA hard drives with storage space in range from 40GB to 200GB. The 160GB and 200GB HDDs spin at 4200rpm, while smaller hard discs spin at 5400rpm. The new Vaio supports from 512MB to 2GB of DDR2 memory.
The laptop comes with Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG and optional Bluetooth, and 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet with RJ-45 interface.
Regarding expansion slots, the Sony VAIO VGN-FE790 features Memory Stick Duo media with MagicGate functionality, ExpressCard/34 Slot (5-in-1 Memory Card Adaptor (VGP-MCA20) supporting Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Secure Digital, xD-Picture Card, and MultiMediaCard - MMC), and PCMCIA - Type II/Type I card slot with CardBus support. The laptop has S-Video and VGA output, as same as 3 USB ports and i.LINK interface (IEEE 1394).
The system comes with Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Media Center or Home Edition.
It weights around 6.17 lbs, and comes in charcoal gray or white color, with possibility to engrave your personalized message on Vaio’s chassis.
The cheapest Intel Core 2 Duo-powered VGN-FE790 costs $1110, and it features Merom T5500 processor running at 1.66 GHz with 2MB of L2 cache. The laptop is also configurable with Celeron 430 CPU at 1.73 GHz with 1MB of cache. In that case, price starts at $940.
