ASUS F555LA-AB31 15.6″ Full HD Laptop (Core i3, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Windows 10)
The Asus F555LA-AB31 is a well equipped yet affordable laptop with a standard-size 15.6-inch display. It has a crispy 1920×1080-pixel Full HD resolution as the main selling point, since this feature is quite rare on laptops priced below $500. In terms of computing, the Asus F555LA-AB31 is a good choice, too. It features an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, besides pre-installed Windows 10 operating system.
Having a Full HD screen instead of usual HD with 1366×768 pixels is really a big advantage of this model over its similarly priced competition. Full HD not only offers sharper and more detail-rich movie playback, but it also provides more space on the Windows 10 Desktop for your programs and enables comfortable side-by-side app use. The F555LA-AB31 doesn’t have IPS technology for wide viewing angles nor touchscreen functionality. These features, however, would add at least $200 to the overall price.
The included 5th Generation Intel Core i3-5010U dual-core processor ensures flawless work on your daily computing tasks. More advanced users, such as photography editors and multimedia creators, are advised to get a laptop with at least Core i5 and preferably Core i7 processor and at least 8GB of system memory. Otherwise the i3 chip coupled with 4GB RAM will serve all your day-to-day needs very well, be it web surfing, email and Skype communication, high-definition video playback, spreadsheet calculations, Word document editing, or even playing some non-demanding PC game titles thanks to the Intel HD 5500 graphics. The hard drive provides an averagely good storage capacity of 500GB, although the HDD’s read and write speeds are slow in comparison to solid state drives.
Other notable specs include a full-size keyboard with numeric pad, touchpad with integrated click buttons, DVD writer drive, the latest and fastest 802.11AC Wi-Fi standard, basic 0.3MP VGA video conferencing camera, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 connector, both HDMI and VGA external display outputs, a combo microphone / headphones audio jack, multi-in-one-format media card reader, wired LAN network interface, and Bluetooth.
Regarding design, the Asus F555LA-AB31 looks quite appealing, despite being made of plastics. The finish on the silver-colored palmrest and black screen lid resembles brushed metal and gives a bit of luxury appearance. The laptop is also quite sleek with its 1″ profile. With a weight of five pounds, the machine isn’t a heavy one in comparison to other full-size mainstream notebooks.
With the built-in 37 WHr battery, you can expect a battery life of around 4-5 hours with light CPU load involved and somewhat reduced screen brightness.

Did you intend to ask if it’s a laptop or netbook? Laptops and notebooks are generally considered to be the same thing nowadays, although technically notebooks were once considered to be smaller laptops that were lightweight. Netbooks are small and lightweight laptops that are so small that they don’t even have an optical drive.
Regardless, given the thin profile of this laptop, light weight, and 15″ screen size I would call it a notebook under either definition.

Question: The information for this laptop does not include any listing of software loaded to it. Does it have MS Word loaded or none?
Also, if a replacement battery were needed, can the one installed be swapped out?

No, it doesn’t have MS Word or any other Office app installed. You can open and read Word documents if you download the Word mobile app from Windows Store, but you can’t edit them unless you have an active Office 365 subscription tied to your Windows account on the F555LA-AB31.
The battery is sealed inside the chassis, so it isn’t replaceable in a user-friendly manner.

Will I be able to upgrade RAM to 16GB with two 8GB sticks?

The F555LA-AB31 has one unoccupied RAM slot, plus the default 4GB memory which isn’t user-accessible. So, you can put in an 8GB stick in the free slot and get 12GB in total.

Hello. Will I be able to replace the i3 with a faster processor like 5th generation i7 or 6 generation i7? I know that would void the warranty, but I’ll do that in the future after it expires.

The i3-5010U uses FCBGA1168 socket, where BGA means it’s designed to be soldered onto the motherboard. In theory, you can unsolder the processor and solder the i7 instead, but that requires proper skill and equipment. In that case, another question is whether notebook’s BIOS supports the i7. If it doesn’t, the i7 won’t work.
