ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH71 15.6″ Gaming Laptop with SSD
The ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH71 15.6-inch notebook for gamers is almost identical to the GL551JM-DH71. These aluminum-clad notebooks with 1080p displays and red backlight keyboards both have the Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M higher-mid-range dedicated video card with 2GB of video memory, Intel’s Core i7-4710HQ processor which is among the fastest on the market, and very big RAM memory capacity of 16GB. What’s the difference between these two models? The GL551JM-EH71 for $100 more ($1,200) brings to the table a 256GB solid state drive instead of 1-Terabyte mechanical hard disk.
The SSD instead of HDD benefits overall performance of the system in every day use big time. It’s especially handy when you’re loading a game with a big storage footprint. You can expect games to load roughly twice faster than with the traditional HDD. More about general differences between SSDs and HDDs you can read here.
As mentioned above, other specs of the GL551JM-EH71 and DH71 are the same. Alongside the IPS-equipped Full HD display and core components capable of running the latest games on high settings and 1920×1080 pixel count, the highlights are a built-in DVD burner, stereo speakers with chambers for a better bass sound, webcam, HDMI and mini Display Port video outputs, 802.11n wireless, Gigabit Ethernet LAN network interface, Bluetooth, three USB 3.0 ports, and a multiformat digital media card reader.
The manufacturer says the battery life lasts up to five hours.

With the EH71 model, could one increase the storage for data files using a card placed and kept in the card reader? If so, are there any limits to the capacity of that card? Also, is the information accessed through the card reader accessed as quickly as information stored on the internal SSD card?

Yes, you can, but an SD card reader itself can be quite slow, so you sometimes have slow read/write speeds even if you use a fast SD card media. I have no info on the max. capacity supported on the laptop. The reader in the GL551JM-EH71 is made by Genesys, but don’t know what exact model. If you own the laptop already you can check what model it is via Device Manager.

You can either get the DH71 configuration with a 1-Terabyte hard drive (http://laptoping.com/specs/product/asus-rog-gl551jm-dh71-15-6-gaming-laptop/) or replace the included 256GB SSD later, since internal storage is user-upgradeable on this laptop.

Is there separate slots for the SSD and HDD such that the SSD can be kept and simply add the 1TB HDD? Thanks.

there is no separate slot but you can utilize both SSD and HDD by removing ODD. there is some 2.4 to 3.5inch box so that you can use your optical device externally while you have both SSD and HDD. in this case the weight of the Laptop decrease by almost 0.4 pound.
