Asus ROG Strix GL502VT(-DS71/-DS74) 15.6″ Gaming Laptop (FHD, GeForce GTX 970M GPU, Intel i7 CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM)

On today’s market, there’s a popular notebook category of gaming laptops – those with powerful specs, but no bulkiness and overly hefty price tags of the traditional gaming notebooks. The 15.6-inch Asus ROG Strix GL502VT-DS71 (~$1,230) and GL502VT-DS74 (~$1,380) are a pair of these. They pack serious computing power and capacious batteries, while looking sleek and weighing only 4.4 pounds, noticeably less than the standard 5-pound 15.6-inchers.

The Asus ROG Strix GL502VT-DS71 and GL502VT-DS74 sport black casings with orange accents. The base is made of plastics, while the lid is made of aluminum. They feature a Full HD IPS wide viewing angle screen, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M dedicated video card, the 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ quad-core processor, and 16 Gigabytes of DDR4 system memory. The DS71 and DS74 are basically the same laptop with a few differences in the internal component department. The GTX 970M in the GL502VT-DS71 includes 3GB of VRAM (video memory), while the GL502VT-DS74 features 6GB VRAM. Furthermore, the DS71 model ships with a 1-Terabyte hard drive, while the DS74 provides a 128GB of solid state drive in addition to the 1TB HDD. In both 3GB and 6GB versions, the Nvidia’s 970M is among the top-performing notebook video cards on the market, meaning that these Asus ROG Strix models are fully capable of running smoothly all available game titles on Full HD resolution and high graphics settings. The Intel Core i7-6700HQ is also among the fastest laptop CPUs, so it’s ideal not only for gaming and usual routine tasks, but also for high-intensity work like video editing. Furthermore, 16GB of DDR4-type RAM is sufficient for very heavy multitasking scenarios, while the 1TB HDD can store a plenty of large PC game installations, movies, and other files. The 128GB SSD option is provided to boost storage performance of the traditionally slow hard disk drive-only storage technology. Thankfully, the included 1TB HDD spins at 7,200rpm instead of usual 5,400rpm, so even the cheaper version of the laptop won’t have too sluggish storage performance. As expected, this light and relatively thin (0.9″) laptop doesn’t feature a built-in DVD drive. Also, a subwoofer speaker which can be found in many gaming laptops is missing, so sound reproduction relies on a pair of standard stereo speakers. Video chats are enabled through a 720p web camera.

Inclusion of keyboard backlight is an unwritten standard for gaming laptops and the GL502VT is no exception. The backlit keyboard features specially marked W, A, S, and D keys and is accompanied by a spacious trackpad.

The Asus ROG Strix GL502VT-DS71 and GL502VT-DS74 offer a bit more than the competition when it comes to PC peripheral connectivity, since they boost the latest ultra-fast USB-C 3.1 type port, as well as a mini DisplayPort video connector, alongside the three standard USB 3.0 ports and HDMI video out. For gaming over the network and general Internet use, they include 802.11AC Wi-Fi wireless and wired Ethernet LAN port. There’s also a built-in Bluetooth module, a media card reader in microSD format, and a combo audio port.

The included 64 WHr battery is quite capacious. However, the components inside the laptop are power-hungry, so the battery life is rather decent than exceptional. According to Asus, the battery can provide “up to 6 hours” of web surfing on a charge.
