HP 15-bs095ms 15.6″ Touch Laptop (Intel i5-7200U CPU, 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD)

HP 15-bs095ms Laptop

The HP 15-bs095ms laptop with its discounted price of $359 will be one of the best Black Friday / Cyber Monday 2017 deals. As the best selling points, this affordable 15.6-inch notebook has a touch-screen, excellent 7th Generation Intel Core i5-7200U processor, and a huge 2-Terabyte hard drive storage space, up from usual 1TB.

With the included i5-7200U (review) dual-core processor and 8GB of system memory, the HP 15-bs095ms laptop can effortlessly handle all the regular computing tasks of the average home and office users. Investing in a pricier laptop with even faster CPUs, like the quad-core i5 and i7 chips, makes sense only if you do some hardware-demanding work like video and music production.

The rest of the specs sheet doesn’t bring any positive surprises nor disappointments. The Microsoft Store’s exclusive HP 15-bs095ms model features the Intel HD 620 (review) integrated graphics which manages casual gaming and the 15.6″ touch-screen with budget-class 1366-by-768 resolution. The display is based on TN panel technology instead of IPS with much wider viewing angles. The plastic chassis with silver colored lid and bottom and a non-backlit isle-style keyboard in the center also houses a DVD writer drive and a 3-cell battery with a relatively low capacity of 31 WHr. The official product page claims the battery life is up to 8 hours. In the real life with normal screen brightness and laptop use, the battery life will be more likely around 4 hours. As for the DVD drive, it can’t be seen on the official product images, but the specs sheet says it’s included.

Furthermore, the notebook provides stereo speakers, a low-resolution VGA web camera, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi and Ethernet LAN networking connectivity. It has two USB 3.1 ports, a USB 2.0 port, HDMI video out connector, multi-format media card reader, combo headphones / mic jack, and Bluetooth.

MS Store also offers a cheaper version of the laptop ($299 on Black Friday), but with somewhat slower Core i3-7100U CPU and smaller 1TB hard drive.

  1. Millie – November 21, 2017:

Would this laptop be good for editing photos with Adobe Lr and Ps?

    • Danijel Z – November 21, 2017:

Lightroom and Photoshop will work decently on this laptop in terms of performance. But, getting a laptop with a quad-core i5 or i7 CPU instead of dual-core i5-7200U can bring noticeable difference. Especially in more demanding Lr & Ps tasks. In addition, a dedicated video card can bring extra performance boost in some LR and PS operations. The HP 15-bs095ms features only basic Intel HD 620 integrated graphics, which can’t utilize GPU acceleration feature of Lr & Ps so well.

You should also take into consideration the basic TN 1366×768 screen of the laptop. Its narrow viewing angles and low resolution definitely aren’t a good solution for photography editing.

In the sub $500 price range it’s hard to find IPS Full HD laptop, but Newegg currently has on offer this $449 machine (with a dedicated video card):

Acer Aspire A515-51G-5536 mid-range laptop with Nvidia video card; 15.6″ Full HD IPS display; Intel Core i5-7200U CPU / ~4,700 points; Nvidia GeForce 940MX 2GB video card; 8GB RAM; 1TB HDD; no DVD; Windows 10 Home

It’s better for your tasks than the HP.
