The HP 15z 1EJ27AV_1 is an budget-class mainstream 15.6-inch Windows laptop. As opposed to the very similar HP 15t with Intel-branded processors, the 15z is based on AMD chips.

Unlike the 15t which comes with the Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 “U” series dual-core CPUs with the Intel HD integrated graphics, the HP 15z 1EJ27AV_1 ships with AMD’s A-series chips. Namely, the entry-level dual-core AMD A9-9420 with the Radeon R5 series integrated graphics, mid-range quad-core A10-9620P with Radeon R5, and upper-mid-range quad-core A12-9720P with Radeon R7 graphics. Regarding the processors’ speed, they are somewhat slower than the comparable Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 series. Nevertheless, AMDs are good choices for the average home and office user. Their integrated Radeon graphics performance is in line with the latest Intel HD series. This means playability of old non-demanding games and many of the latest titles only on low in-game settings and resolutions. The A12-9720P with Radeon R7 is the best option among the three if gaming is a matter of concern for you.

There’s 8, 12 or 16 Gigabytes of RAM memory in the 15z 1EJ27AV_1. Even the lowest 8GB option ensures flawless multitasking and no RAM-related performance issues in all popular Windows programs, including demanding ones. Data storage choices are a spacious 1 Terabyte hard drive or much smaller and much faster 128GB or 256GB solid state drive. A DVD drive is missing on this laptop.

The HP 15z 1EJ27AV_1 comes with either HD 1366×768 or Full HD 1920×1080-pixel screen resolution. The latter offers sharper picture and more space for apps on the screen. Touchscreen is available as an option on the lower-resolution HD screen. But, IPS technology for wide viewing angles has been completely omitted.

As usual, this 15.6-incher has a keyboard with chiclet keys and number pad on the right, as well as a multi-touch trackpad with mechanical “click” buttons instead of integrated in the surface. Keyboard backlight is optional.

For sound, there are stereo speakers. Video chats are enabled by a web camera with 720p resolution. For getting you online, the notebook uses 802.11n or 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless and Ethernet LAN connections. Bluetooth is optional. For peripherals, there are three USB ports, with two of them supporting the fastest USB 3.1 standard and one being an old USB 2.0. Video output to external monitors and HDTVs is supported via an HDMI port. Finally, there’s a multi-in-one reader for your media cards, as well as a combo mic/headphones port.

HP estimates the 15z 1EJ27AV_1 has a power autonomy of up to 6 hours and 45 minutes on configurations with the HD display options. Full HD models can last “up to 5 hours and 15 minutes” on a charge.

The laptop’s weight starts at 4.1 pounds. The profile is 0.9″ thick. You can select one of the six available colors of the lid, sides, and bottom: black, grey, silver, gold, blue, and red.

    Marillyn Ball

This is by far the slowest computer I have ever had. It is maddening and the steps you have to take to get to the password window are unnecessary and time wasting. I just ditched a Chromebook for all the reasons that people give on the forums, but how I miss its speed. You raise the top, it lights up, you put in your password and presto! I don’t see how I can live with – let me think – ah, this turtle.
