TDK announced a laptop hard drive replacement based on NAND Flash memory. The solid-state disc (SSD), with 32GB of storage space, connects to the host across a standard IDE connector, Reg Hardware reports.
The TDK’s SSD is about 80% of the size of a standard 2.5-inch laptop hard drive, and it consumes less power than a standard notebook HDD. The unit’s controller supports data transfer of up to 33.3MBps, the manufacturer published.
Samsung also launched its 32GB SSD in March. After testing, it was reported that, when loading Windows XP, the desktop appeared on the screen of the SSD laptop in about 18 seconds. The HDD-based notebook took about 31 seconds to reach the same point. Also, because it has no moving parts, SSDs are said to be more durable and have lower power consumption.
Currently, there is no TDK SSD pricing and availability info.
