Craig Pringle – Hands on Review of the M400
I was lucky enough to borrow a Toshiba M400 from Toshiba New Zealand for a couple of days. I picked it up today before lunch when I was passing by. I had quite a busy day today so the thing sat on my desk all day largely unmolested. Talk about torment!
The unit I received was not speced to the gills, but was not too bad. It sports a 1.8GHz Dual Core Centrino Duo processor, which is fast enough, but it only has 512MB of RAM installed. On the storage side there is a 70GB hard drive – plenty of space to fill up over time! All things considered though it seems to run pretty well for a machine with only 512MB of RAM, but if I were ordering one it would be fair to say I would want a couple of gigs in it. There was no optical drive installed.
ZDNet Toshiba Portege M400-S933 Tablet PC (Preconfigured) User Reviews, Ratings & Opinions
Pros:
• Convertible Laptop that can also function as a tablet. • Disk drive / DVD Burner. • Dual Core Processor • Screen in Beautiful (I have the upgraded screen with high resolution). • Great performanceCons:
Trying to adjust to a 12″ screen. Higher resolution means harder to see icons and text.
I tested the new Toshiba Portege M400-S933, priced at $1,699, aimed at the everyday business user.
Toshiba still considers tablets to be laptops first. Unlike others that look like Etch-A-Sketch toys with just a screen, Toshiba’s tablet has a built-in keyboard. Flip the screen 180 degrees and slide it on top of the keyboard and you’re in tablet mode. With the business user in mind, this 4.5-pound model includes a fingerprint reader, SD memory card slot, spill-resistant keyboard and hard-drive protection system, which stops the drive from spinning if it detects any sort of movement.
I used the M400 during interviews, penned meeting notes and doodled when bored. It did a fairly accurate job converting handwriting to text, although it takes a few steps (select words, approve words, convert to text). Don’t expect it to be a mind reader. Sometimes, I can’t even read my own handwriting; should a computer?
