VIA has announced the Surfboard C855 Reference Design, a netbook motherboard that supports full HD video playback.
The chip makers says the VIA Surfboard C855, which includes a C7-M ULV processor and the Chrome9 integrated graphics, provides “flawless playback of high bit-rate 1080p HD video”. Along with hardware decoding of H.264, MPEG-2/4, VC-1 and WMV9 video standards, the netbook platform supports internal display resolutions of up to 1366 x 768 pixels and external display resolutions up to 1920 x 1440 pixels.
The surfboard C855 also incorporates 8-channel HD audio, as well as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G connectivity.
According to a specifications sheet, it has one memory socket for up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM and support for 2.5″ and 1.8″ HDDs.
We have no info on availability of C855-based netbooks.
