Lenovo, Toshiba, and Acer unveiled yesterday their first notebooks supporting WiMAX, next-generation wireless broadband technology.
The PC makers are now shipping laptops with Intel’s WiMAX/Wi-Fi Link 5050 module, formerly codenamed “Echo Peak.”
The first WiMAX enabled notebooks are the Lenovo ThinkPad W500, W700, SL400 and X200, Lenovo IdeaPad Y530, Toshiba Satellite U405-ST550W, Acer Aspire 4930-6862, and Aspire 6930-6771.
WiMAX promises to be the highest performing mobile network in the United States with average downlink speeds of 2-4 Mbps and uplink rate of 1-2 Mbps, according to Acer’s press release.
The first WiMAX network in the U.S. has been launched recently by XOHM in Baltimore.
